Joseph “Joe” J. Cuhel, Chippewa Falls, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Marshfield Hospital in Eau Claire.

Joe was born April 8, 1953.

He was the beloved son of Ludwig Jr., and Evelynne Cuhel, Cadott.

He was first and foremost a downhill skier. He fell in love with the freedom and adventure downhill skiing provided, and it became a passion he would pursue for the rest of his life.

Joe passed on his love for the outdoors to his sons and taught them to ski at three years old. Every season was filled with adventures, going to new places to ski and experiences with his family. This tradition continued well after his boys grew up and they would still meet up every season, at various snowy mountains on the West Coast to ski together.

He especially loved British Columbia, and made many ski trips there in recent years. He was also very proud to be a part of his grandchildren’s skiing experiences, and would meet up at many resorts around the Midwest and West Coast, to create fun times and lasting memories.

Last season, despite a low snow year, he was able to ski with his triplet grandchildren 10 times around the Midwest. Joe’s last ski adventure was last month, where he lucked out, with a rare summer powder day at Mt. Hood, Ore., with his son, John, and grandson, Olin, over Father’s Day weekend.

He also enjoyed canoeing, mountain biking and his evening eBike rides around the neighborhood. He thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with his “coffee crew,” sharing stories and telling jokes.

Joe was a loving husband and recently celebrated 49 years of marriage to his devoted wife, Judy. He will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his loving wife – Judy; sons, daughters- in-law and grandchildren – John, Dawn and Olin, Jim, Angela and Daphne, Olivia and Jasper; his sister – Shirley Leech; Judy’s siblings – Barb (Don), Joan and Tom; as well as nieces; nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brother-in-law – Ed Leech; brother-in-law – Ed Kocher; and numerous cousins.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, July 31, from 4-7 p.m., at Leiser Funeral Home in Cadott. Burial will be at a later date at the Bohemian Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the ZCBJ Bohemian Lodge or Irvine Park. The family requests no flowers please.
