Edgar’s varsity boys basketball team’s 2021-22 season ended on Saturday night with a 51-39 road loss to Marshfield Columbus in a WIAA Division 5 regional championship.
The Wildcats were only down, 23-22, at halftime but they were outscored, 28-17, by the Dons in the second half. Marshfield Columbus shot 52.9 percent from the floor while Edgar was 26.7 percent.
Senior guard Ashton Schuett was the lone Wildcats player in doubledigit scoring with 13 points. Sophomore guard Teegan Streit led Edgar with six assists and four steals while sophomore Brett Baumgartner paced the team with six rebounds.
Edgar concludes this season with a 14-12 record. Marshfield Columbus improves its record to 23-4 and will play Wausau Newman at 7 p.m. this Thursday, March 10, in a WIAA Division 5 sectional semifinal at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School.
Wildcats head coach Dave Huss has praise for his group of seniors this year.
“I want to thank all the players, coaches and managers for another quality season,” Huss said. “I am especially indebted to our four seniors Ayden Weisenberger, Ashton Schuett, Peyton Dahlke and Everet Brehm, for their steadfastness and consistency in leadership this season.”
Edgar replaced all five starting players from last season’s state tournament squad.
“Many people had questions about our team this year after the departure of several seniors from last year’s squad,” Huss said. “Our seniors were rock solid all season long. We had some exhilarating wins and we also experienced some bumps during our journey as a team. Each day, our senior class came to practice the next day with the same attitude, demeanor and team-first mentality. They were a great group of guys to be around and I know they will all be successful in their future endeavors.”
Edgar dominated Northland Lutheran, 83-46, in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal on Friday. The Wildcats jumped out to a 55-21 halftime advantage.
Freshman guard Leyton Schuett led Edgar with 17 points in the win while his older brother, Ashton Schuett, and senior Everet Brehm added 12 points each. Baumgartner contributed nine points. Ashton Schuett paced the Wildcats with 10 assists and he tied Streit for the team lead in steals with four apiece. Sophomore Karter Butt and Leyton Schuett added three steals each.
