Falcons second in Rapids

It didn’t take long for the Abbotsford Falcons volleyball team to knock of the rust from last year, finishing second over the weekend in a tournament that was held in Wisconsin Rapids.

The Falcons went 3-1 on Saturday, but that was only because the draw did them no favors. Abby opened up against eventual tournament champions Fox Valley Lutheran, and fell 25-17, 25-12.

Abbotsford quickly put the straight sets loss behind them, and dismantled Sheboygan Falls in their next match, 2514 and 25-13. The Falcons had to battle hard for their second victory, a three setter over Manawa that ended by a score of 25-13, 22-25 and 15-8.

Abbotsford wrapped up its day by shellacking Necedah in two quick sets, taking the first set 25-9, and running away with the second set 25-11.

Olivia Hammel had an excellent day at net, tallying 26 kills and 39 digs. Lydia Carlson recorded 26 kills and 36 digs. Haylee Soyk struck the ball well to the tune of 19 kills. Sydney Falteisek showed off her live arm, striking 14 kills and serving ten aces.

Bridgett Pogodzinski turned in 12 kills, 48 assists and 41 digs. Stephany Espino added 24 assists, 24 digs and a team high 12 aces. Adriana Fuentes finished with a team high 54 digs.

“I think it was a great first outing for the players,” Falcons head coach Lee Schreiber said. “No matter what rotation we are in, there is a lot of youth on the floor. They all responded great. We definitely have a few things to work on, but sky’s the limit with this group.”
