LETTER TO THE EDITOR - Coming home but not just for the holidays

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the Editor: Tis the season when we feel the spirits of joy, goodwill, and the desire to be together in the community of family and friends; as expressed in songs like “There’s No Place Like Home For the Holidays,” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” But we would like to suggest that there is more than one home you should consider this Christmas: going to the home of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.

The Covid Pandemic created a situation where it was easy to justify not attending worship. After all, the church itself restricted access, and encouraged viral attendance as a valid alternative. but that was then, and this is now.

This year has been declared as the “Year of the Eucharist,” And while you can pray without going into a church and attend a service virtually online or through a telecast, in order to receive the Eucharist, the body of Jesus Christ, you need to come to, and participate in the Mass at your church. More importantly, you are not alone In doing this. You are in communion and sharing the experience with other members of your church community.

During His three-year ministry Jesus met and had interactions with many. However, knowing His time was limited, He charged his Apostles with going out, bringing the word to those who had not seen or interacted with Him, and more importantly, for Faith communities churches to pass on “truth” He had revealed to His followers. Most importantly, He gave us the Eucharist, a way in which throughout 2,000 years it is possible to be one with Jesus. But to do this you need to come to a Catholic church. Please consider this an invitation from Jesus Christ and to come home to the community that is the church. To all, remember Jesus Christ is the reason for the season, so Merry Christmas and have a safe and happy New Year. The local Catholic churches are St. Anthony’s in Athens, St. John the Baptist in Edgar, St. Mary’s in Marathon and St. Joseph’s in Stratford and they would be happy to welcome you there.
