Greenwood-Loyal drama team advances
High school students from Greenwood and Loyal, in the first year of a collaborative one-act play, advanced to the state level of competition. The WISDAA (Wisconsin Interscholastic Speech and Dramatic Arts Association) sponsors the one-act competition. One-act must be a production less than 40 minutes with a fully portable set. Greenwood-Loyal advanced through district and sectional competitions, scoring high enough to advance to the state competition, to be held at the UW-Green Bay campus Nov. 16-17.
“This was our goal as we started out in August with 6:30 a.m. practices. These students are dedicated and committed to working as a team to bring the best production to life in front of the judges. I’m so proud of all of them,” said Director Jo Elmer.
“Now it’s time to fine-tune the performance for the state competition and hopefully win some awards. I think we have some performers worthy of a best actor/actress award.
“This is a young group of kids, but going to the state level of competition hopefully will fuel their desire to continue in the dramatic arts. The experience of performing on a larger scale as well as being able to watch other schools compete is a memorable experience for the students.”
The students are performing “Social Pariahs” by Jared Mallard, a portrait of how your first love can affect your life, no matter how old you grow. It is a story of how teenage sorrow, bravery and beauty can stay with a person forever.
“Social Pariahs” will be performed for the community Sunday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Greenwood High School cafetorium. Everyone is invited to attend and support the collaborative efforts between the Greenwood and Loyal students. Cost is $5 for adults, with students free.
