There were no event wins for the Gilman Pirates, but there were several time improvements for them during Friday’s Stanley-Boyd Oriole Invitational.

The girls finished eighth with 52.1428 points, led by Claire Drier and Bailey Angell, who accounted for 29 of the team’s points in their individual events.

Drier, Jaylen Copenhaver, Addy Vick and Patricia Kloss added eight points with their second-place finish in the 800-meter relay, which came with a time of 1:54.63 that was just behind the host Orioles (1:52.17) and well ahead of third-place Cadott (2:00.58).

The 400-meter relay team of Kylee Copenhaver, Aubrey Mann, Rilla Syryczuk and Jaylen Copenhaver was third in its race at 58.3 seconds, just ahead of Neillsville (58.52) and behind McDonell Central (52.56) and Abbotsford (57.21).

Drier’s highest finish was second in the 300-meter hurdles. The junior finished in a season-best 48.82 seconds, just ahead of Stanley-Boyd’s Lula Chwala (48.92). McDonell’s Elyse Bushman won in 47.43 seconds. Drier was fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles at 17.64 seconds, another season-best, while Syryczuk was 11th at 19.75 seconds. Bushman won that race too in 15.64 seconds.

Drier added a fourth-place finish in the long jump competition at 15 feet, 4.75 inches. Vick (14-4.5) was 12th and Kyra Rabuck (12-2.5) was 22nd for Gilman in an event won by Bloomer’s Briella Hartman at 15-10.5.

Angell scored 11 points by taking third in the shot put with a throw of 35-7 and fourth in the discus with a throw of 1022. She was 13 inches behind winner Reese Roehl of Flambeau in the shot put and 11 inches behind Athens’ Sy’ Rih Hartwig. Abbotsford’s Margo Pogodzinski won the discus at 111 feet.

Vick scored twice individually. She was fifth in the 200-meter dash in a seasonbest 28.34 seconds, while Kloss lowered her time to 29.74 seconds to take ninth and Rabuck lowered her time to 31.58 seconds to take 19th. Vick was 1.14 seconds behind winner Oriah Harris of Abbotsford. Vick was part of a seven-way tie for fourth place in the high jump. She cleared 4-6, 2 inches behind the tri-winners Bethany Pilgrim of Stanley-Boyd, Sydney Falteisek of Abbotsford and Anne Siegenthaler of McDonell. Jaylen Copenhaver tied her season-best of 4-4 and tied for 11th.

Copenhaver scored three points with her sixth-place finish in the 100-meter dash. She was timed in a season-best 13.77 seconds not far behind winner Ava Ford of Athens (13.04). Kylee Copenhaver (14.96) and Mann (15.05) were 18th and 19th.

Also for Gilman, Rabuck was ninth in the 400-meter dash at 1:14.34, 0.39 seconds from scoring; Kloss was 12th (293.5), Syryczuk was 15th (28-3.25) and Kylee Copenhaver was 17th (27-11.25), all with season-bests in the triple jump, Syryczuk was 19th (25 feet) in the shot put and Kylee Copenhaver was 33rd (46-4) in the discus.

Abbotsford won the girls meet with 114.5 points, followed by Stanley-Boyd (84.1428), Cadott (83.1428) and McDonell Central (81.5). Neillsville edged Bloomer for fifth 73.2857-72.7857. Athens (72) was seventh and Gilman outscored Flambeau (29) and Fall Creek (21.5).

The boys scored 34 points to get by Athens (22) for its team placement. They were led by three third-place finishes and a second-place finish from Chad Konsella in the long jump, where he went 19-10 to fall 6 inches behind Stanley-Boyd standout Madden Mahr. Konsella was 6 inches ahead of third-place jumper Cameron Kennedy of Neillsville.

Chad Konsella got third in the 100-meter dash in a season-best 11.68 seconds, which wasn’t far behind winner Madden Mahr (11.17) and Carson Hodowanic (11.5) of Stanley-Boyd. Konsella was 0.04 seconds ahead of Neillsville’s Brody Bergemann.

The 800-meter relay team of Konsella, Logan Halida, Brady McAlpine and Sawyer Winger finished in 1:41.19 to place third behind Stanley-Boyd (1:31.84) and McDonell Central (1:38.7). Abbotsford was 0.84 seconds behind the Pirates. The 400-meter team of Max Ustianowski, Trevor Vick, Wyatt Orth and James Wojcik was fifth in 51.72 seconds behind Neillsville (47.45), Abbotsford (48.51), McDonell (48.86) and Fall Creek (49.76).

Taydyn Angell set a new season-best distance in the shot put, getting one out there 39-8 to take third behind Chase Sturm (44-9) and Henry Koch (44-4) of Stanley-Boyd. Pirate Caleb Marion was 13th at 33-5. Marion tied Fall Creek’s Wyatt Raether for ninth in the discus at 101-6, 41 inches away from scoring.

Quintin Franzen added two points with a seventh-place time of 18.79 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles. Vick tried the race for the first time and placed 12th (22.41). Winger was part of a three-way tie for sixth place in the high jump by clearing 5-6. Vick tied for 11th at 5 feet.

In the 200-meter dash, Gilman’s McAlpine (24.917), Winger (25.05), Halida (25.35) and Franzen (25.52) were 10th through 13th, all in season-best times. Mitchell Moran was 17th (2:43.86) in the 800- and 18th (6:18.03) in the 1,600-meter runs. Ustianowski was 17th in 12.8 seconds and Orth was 27th in 13.44 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

Vick was 10th at 36-7.5, Ustianowski was 12th at 33-11.5 and Moran was 14th at a season-best 30-4.25 in the triple jump. Angell was 18th (93-5) and Elijah Madlon was 35th (53-7) in the discus and Madlon was 29th in the shot put (26-5). Halida was 18th (15-11.75), Orth was 21st (15-7.5) and Moran was 26th (14-5) in the long jump.

Stanley-Boyd won the meet with 183.5 points, followed by Neillsville (110), McDonell (98), Flambeau (55.5), Abbotsford (49.5), Cadott (46), Bloomer (44.5) and Fall Creek (40).
