GILMAN TRACK & FIELD - Pirates’ Angell, Vick, Konsella top-five finishers in Small School Invite

Five Gilman Pirates scored points against some strong track and field competition during Saturday’s Northern Badger Small Schools Classic hosted by UW-Stout.

Bailey Angell had the highest finish, placing second out of 48 entrants in the girls shot put. Her best throw went 36 feet, 2.5 inches, putting her 5 inches ahead of third-place finisher Sy’Rih Hartwig of Athens. Colby’s Daelyn Rieck won it with a toss of 38-1.5.

Addy Vick placed fifth for the Gilman girls in the long jump competition, which drew 50 entrants. Vick’s best jump carried 15-1.5, which was a 3.5-inch improvement over the freshman’s first meet in Neillsville March 15. Pirate Claire Drier was 10th at 14-5 in her first meet of the spring.

McKaylan Lewis, a freshman from Math and Science Academy, Minn., won with a jump of 16-10. Marika Gago of Ladysmith (15-6.5) and Samantha Perez of St. Charles, Minn. (15-4) finished just ahead of Vick.

Drier added Gilman’s last two points in the girls meet with a time of 10.18 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles final. That was good for seventh place, 0.01 seconds ahead of Turtle Lake’s Jessica Bittorf. Hailee Halverson of Barron won it in 9.07 seconds. Drier had the sixth-best preliminary time at 10.13 seconds, while teammate Rilla Syryczuk was 30th at 11.98 seconds.

With its 15 points, Gilman tied Bruce and Abbotsford for 15th place out of 27 scoring teams. Rochester Lourdes, Minn. won the team championship with 48 points, three more than Cameron. Byron, Minn. was third with 37.5 points, one more than Prescott. Loyal was fifth with 34.

Vick added a 17th-place time of 29.41 seconds in the 200-meter dash, while Drier was 20th (29.54) and Kyra Rabuck was 72nd (32.15). Vick was 15th in the 400-meter dash at 1:08.94. Kylee Copenhaver was 19th in the triple jump at 26-11.5, while Aubrey Mann was 23rd at 26-4. Jaylen Copenhaver was 22nd in the 55-meter dash in a time of 8.202 seconds, Syryczuk was 45th (8.58), Kylee Copenhaver was 50th (8.704) and Mann was 60th (8.87).

Gilman’s boys were led by a fifth-place finish from Chad Konsella in the 400-meter dash. He was timed at 57.31 seconds. He got past Auburndale’s Sawyer Cherney by 0.16 seconds to get into the top five. Gilman’s Logan Halida was 22nd in 1:00.39. Mason Gay of Owen-Withee won the race in 55.42 seconds.

Konsella had a busy day, taking part in four events. He was 17th in the 200-meter dash in 25.08 seconds, Halida was 53rd in 27.38 seconds and Pirate Trevor Vick was 66th in 28.25 seconds. Elk Mound’s Keinin Miller won the final in a meet-record 23.25 seconds. Konsella was 18th in the 55-meter dash at 7.14 seconds, while Sawyer Winger was 43rd for Gilman (7.453), Halida was

47th (7.56) and Quintin Franzen (7.646) was 53rd. Ethan West of Prescott won the final in 6.67 seconds.

Konsella added a 13th-place finish in the long jump at 17-5.5. Halida took 34th at 15-0.5.

Winger was the Pirates’ final scorer, taking seventh in the high jump by clearing 5-8. Vick tied for 11th at 5-3. Byron’s Ryan Stites and Ladysmith’s Elias Makunda both cleared 6-2 with Stites getting the win.

Franzen was two spots and 0.08 seconds away from making the final in the 55-meter hurdles. He was 10th in the preliminaries at 9.91 seconds.

Taydyn Angell just missed the top 10 in the shot put, placing 11th at 37-6. He was 7.5 inches behind 10th-place thrower Eyan Miller of Prescott. Elijah Madlon was 45th at 27-3.5. Vick was 21st in the triple jump at 32-2.5.

The Pirates tied Loyal for 24th place with their six points. St. Charles was the boys team champion with 70 points, just ahead of Prescott (67.5). Byron (40.5), Flambeau (33) and Elk Mound (29) rounded out the top five.
