Cadott places ahead of some of best in the biz
The weekend saw good weather and good efforts from the Cadott wrestling team, as they traveled to the Ellsworth Invitational Dec. 7, bringing home second out of 12 teams.
“Overall, I am very happy with how the team performed,” said coach Josh Spaeth.
The Hornets placed in front of two ranked Minnesota teams and finished right behind the top ranked Division 2 team, in Ellsworth.
“We showed that we can compete with some of the best teams in the state,” said Spaeth.
Individually, Cadott also crowned three champions at the tournament, as seniors Steven Pfeiffer (170-182 pounds) and Brady Spaeth (170-182) placed first. Sophomore Gavin Tegels (195) also came in at the top of his weight class.
Added to that, B. Spaeth received the Jack Radabaugh Most Outstanding Wrestler Award.
“Steven wrestled very aggressively…he stayed in every match mentally and continually scored points,” said J. Spaeth.
Coming in second at Ellsworth, were sophomore Logan Harel (113), junior Nelson Wahl (152-160), and seniors Ethan Tegels (220) and Josh Briggs (heavyweight).
Fifth place finishers were sophomore Kaleb Sonnentag (126-132), and freshmen Tristan Drier (138) and Dawson Webster (145-152).
“Tristan wrestled very aggressively on his feet all tournament,” said J. Spaeth. “He was always trying to score. Dawson had a great tournament. When he was down by 4, he stayed persistent and pinned an experienced senior opponent.”
Rounding things out, freshmen Nick Fasbender (120) and Cole Pfeiffer (138-145) came in seventh.
J. Spaeth says even though the Hornets showed what they’re made of, there is a way to go to where the team wants to be this season.
“The boys are working hard and doing their best,” said J. Spaeth. “I believe we will see continued improvement each and every week going forward.”
