WIAA DIV. 3 WRESTLING - Duellman, Angell advance to Edgar meet Saturday
WIAA DIV. 3 WRESTLING
Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe senior Troy Duellman got one step closer to his third straight state appearance while freshman Taydyn Angell kept his first season alive at Saturday’s WIAA Division 3 Auburndale wrestling regional.
Needing top-four finishes in their weight classes to advance, Duellman improved to 33-5 and took second at 157 pounds, while Angell was third at 215 pounds and sits at 3210 while heading to his first sectional meet.
The two Gilman representatives will compete Saturday at the WIAA Division 3 Edgar sectional, where the top three wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the Feb. 22-24 state tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison. Competition Saturday starts at 10 a.m.
Duellman handily won his first two matches before getting another shot at his Lakeland Conference nemesis, Tyler Sunday of Clear Lake, in the 157-pound championship bout. Duellman pinned Edgar’s William Hackel in 49 seconds and took an 11-0 major decision over Auburndale’s 33-13 Wyatt Malsin in the semifinals.
Duellman and Sunday were on top of their games from a defensive standpoint in the final. Sunday got the one escape he needed to win 1-0 and beat Duellman for the third time this season. The two met five times last year with Sunday winning all five. Chances are, they aren’t done facing each other yet.
Duellman will open sectional competition Saturday against sophomore Trey Bos of Shell Lake (21-23). The two did not meet in Lakeland Conference competition this season. The winner will face either Cumberland junior Harrison Ruppel (4012) or Brandon Knetter of Stratford (21-15) in the semifinals. Sunday is likely to come out of the other side of the bracket and reach the finals.
Angell started his regional tournament with a pin in 1:39 over Glenwood City’s Jackson Logghe (25-16) in the quarterfinals. Angell lost a close 4-2 decision to eventual champion Zach Hellendrung of Boyceville, who is 22-4, in the semifinals.
Angell pinned Stratford’s Walker Weis in 1:54 in the third-place bout to assure he’d advance. Then, in the second-place wrestleback, Cadott’s Axel Tegels (35-7) handed him a 14-2 loss by major decision. It was the second win of the season for Tegels over Angell.
At Edgar, Angell opens with 9-3 senior Josh Baker of Ladysmith in the quarterfinals. Hellendrung is the favorite to be waiting for the winner in the semifinals. Tegels is the favorite in the other half of the bracket.
The Wolfpack’s third entrant in the regional, freshman Kadyn Jones went 2-2 and placed sixth at 138 pounds to end his year at 18-19.
He was pinned in his first match by Boyceville’s Landyn Leslie in 22 seconds, but stayed alive with a pin in 2:53 over Auburndale’s Coleman Becker and a pin in 2:30 over Cadott’s Brenton Faber (2219). That put him in the fifth-place match, where a win would’ve given him a chance to wrestleback for fourth, but Stratford’s Lucas Forrest earned a 5-3 decision to knock out Jones.
The Wolfpack scored 54 points to place 10th and outscore Athens (35), Durand-Arkansaw (30.5) and Thorp/Owen-Withee (0) in the 13-team tournament. Stratford (274) and Marathon (221.5) took the top two spots and earned berths in Tuesday’s WIAA Division 3 Cadott team sectional. Glenwood City just missed, taking third with 217 points.
