A thens College notes

The following students were named to the fall 2023 dean’s list at UW-River Falls: Evan Neigum, animal science and Maleah Redmann, animal science. To be named to the dean’s list, a full-time undergraduate must earn a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a scale of 4.0, or midway between an “A” and “B” average.

Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on Feb. 8 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Two games of Sheepshead were played. Wil Strack won first place and Sally Stubbe came in second in the first game. Pat Frank won first and Norbert Lake came in second in the second game. Low score went to Butch Boris.

Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Board game night

All ages are welcome at a monthly board game night at MCPL Athens (203 Alfred St., Athens). Games will be available to choose from, and participants are welcome to bring in their own games to play. Sessions will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m on March 21, April 18 and May 16. This event is free and open to the public with no registration required. For more information, call 715-257-7292.

Family Story Times

Bring your entire family to story time at the new Alfred Street location. Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to join library staff in Athens for this 30-minute program. Participants will read books, sing songs, and enjoy other literature-based activities. Family Story Times will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Feb. 19 and 26.

Embroidery 101

Adults who want to learn embroidery are invited to the Marathon County Public Library’s Edgar Branch (224 S. Third Ave., Edgar) for a free class, Embroidery 101, on Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 5 to 6 p.m. Library staff will first go over the basics of embroidery and participants will then have time to practice the skills and socialize. This program is not just for beginners: If you’re an embroidery pro, feel free to join. This event is free and open to the public. No registration is required, and basic supplies will be provided. New Edgar Cookbook

Adults in the Edgar area are invited to contribute to a brand new Edgar Community Cookbook. Drop off recipes at the Marathon County Public Library’s Edgar Branch, 224 S. 3rd Ave., Edgar, or email recipes to MCPL.Edgar@co.marathon.wi.us before Sept. 1. Pokeman Club

Family Story Times

Children of all ages and their parents and caregivers are invited to join library staff on the first and third Tuesday of the month at the Edgar Branch Library for Family Story Time. Enjoy learning through stories, songs and other literaturebased activities in this 30-minute program. The next Family Story Time will be held from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Community events

Community events are planned in the basement of St. Stephen Lutheran Church. On Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 1 to 3 p.m., residents are invited to play bingo for prizes and enjoy refreshments and snacks. If you need a ride or have any questions, call Mark at 715348-5802 or Colleen at 715-5718277.

Preschool, 4K Day

Edgar Preschool Screening and 4K Registration Day will be on March 15, from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Information letters will be sent out in mid February to all parents of children ages 3 and 4. M arathon Ginter birth

A son, Teagan Scott Ginter, was born to Taylor and Caleb Ginter, Marathon, on February 6, 2024, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He weighed nine pounds, 11.2 ounces and was 21.25 inches long.

Hanke birth

Adaughter, Riley Elizabeth Hanke, was born to Gizelle and Cody Hanke, Marathon, on February 5, 2024, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. She weighed eight pounds, 16 ounces and was 20.5 inches long.

Children of all ages and their parents/ caregivers are invited to join library staff in Marathon City for story time each Thursday. Participants will read books, sing songs, and more during their 30 to 45 minutes together. Family Story Times are scheduled from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Feb. 22 and 29.

Health care directives

Marathon City EMS and Aspirus Hospital will host an informational meeting on planning for future health care decisions on Sunday, Feb. 25, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the Marathon City Fire Department, 408 Market St. Participants will learn the difference between Power of Attorney, Advance Directives and Do Not Resusictate.

The discussion is designed for families who are caring for a loved one at home or for those who have already transitioned to a skilled nursing facility. Jason Krautkramer, from Eckert & Krautkramer LLC will be available to answer any legal questions following the presentation. Light refreshments will be served.

The Stratford Book Club will discuss “Horse” by Geraldine Brooks at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the MCPL Stratford Branch. February’s pick is based on the true story of a record-breaking thoroughbred, Lexington. Call the library at 715-687-4420 for more information.

C ounty Wi-Fi hotspots still available

The Marathon County Public Library has extended its Wi-Fi hotspot lending pilot program until June 30. Mobile hotspots provide an internet connection in locations where a cellular signal is already available. Patrons must not already have access to equipment or internet services sufficient to meet their educational needs. For more information, call 715-261-7200 or visit www.mcpl.us/ hotspots.

MAREA

The Marshfield Area Retired Educators’ Association met in December. The meeting was called to order by President Doreen Schultz at the home of Trina Tiffany. Grace recited a poem.

The minutes were corrected for the name of the food pantry that the donations were given to Soup or Socks. No treasurer’s report was given and will be covered next month.

Committee reports

Health: Kathleen Hasenohrl talked about eating small portions and to eat whatever you want.

Legislative: Curt Hanson reported that the Legislature has agreed to give raises to the University of Wisconsin staff.

Membership: Trina Tiffany reported that the Facebook page is up and running. If members are having problems getting into the page or how to use it, let Trina know. She will be posting pictures and events.

Pension: Carol Subera reported that, as of Nov. 30, the CORE was at 7.49 and the Bench was at 7.10. The Variable was at 16.36 and 17.02.

Public Relations/Correspondence, Sunshine and Shadows: Carol Ballerstein brought Christmas cards to send to members who are not able to attend meetings. She informed the membership that Arletta Goldamer passed away. She had been a member for many years.

Scholarships: Ruby Pinter reported that she is waiting for grades from last year’s scholarship recipients. When those are submitted, checks will be sent to the students.

Volunteer Hours: Everyone was reminded to track their volunteer hours.

WREA Foundation: Next month, the group will collect for the WREA Foundation.

Old and new business Sally Lucas has organized a retirement information meeting for April 22 at Marshfield Senior High School. Happy Birthday was sung for Mavis Wood, who will be 90.

Members shared memories of special gifts that had been received or given. An upcoming meeting will feature a Ukraine family.
