WOLFPACK WRESTLING

Troy Duellman won another tournament championship and Taydyn Angell took a third-place match for the second straight weekend for the Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe Wolfpack at Saturday’s Ladysmith Wrestling Invitational.

For Duellman, the title at 157 pounds was his fourth of the season as he improved to 25-2 in his senior season. Angell placed in the top five for the fourth time in five tournaments during his freshman season.

Kadyn Jones, a freshman, added a 10thplace finish at 138 pounds for the Wolfpack, who placed 16th in the team standings with 110 points and finished ahead of Lakeland Conference rival Bruce (78).

Duellman was the top seed in the 157-pound bracket and drew a bye into the quarterfinals, where he pinned DMarqos Youngthunder of Black River Falls in 1:25. He took care of Bloomer-Colfax’s Dyllon Zwiefelhofer in the semifinals with a pin in 1:22 and clinched the championship with a commanding 12-5 decision over Logan Lodel of Reedsville.

Taydyn Angell improved to 23-5 with his third-place finish. After an opening bye, Angell pinned Steven Hoy of Shell Lake in 1:05 in his quarterfinal match. Cadott’s Axel Tegels (20-5) won a close semifinal match 6-3 before losing 10-3 in the final to Rice Lake’s 30-2 Easton Stone. Angell went to the third-place match where he pinned Keanu Maphis of Black River Falls (19-8) in 2:43.

Jones went 2-2 and sits at 11-12 for the season. He dropped a 7-4 decision to 1311 Owen Anderson of Turtle Lake-Clayton to start his day, but rebounded with two straight wins. He pinned Cadott’s Landon Stark in 32 seconds and stuck Eau Claire Memorial’s Adrik Dix just before the first period ended at 1:59 to get to the 10thplace match. He lost a tight one there to 11-14 Lucas Lodel of Reedsville by a score of 8-7.

Shell Lake won the team championship with 374.5 points, while Cadott (332), Turtle Lake-Clayton (285), Eau Claire Memorial (274), Osceola (273), Ladysmith (263), Phillips (255), Rice Lake (242), Cameron (241) and Abbotsford-Colby (238.5) filled out a competitive top 10.

The Wolfpack is back on the mats tonight, Thursday, for a Lakeland Conference quad at Clear Lake. The team will wrestle the host Warriors and Turtle Lake-Clayton to complete its league duals. Bruce also will attend. From there it’s on to the St. Croix Falls Invitational on Saturday.

Cornell Quad

The Wolfpack put up some solid individual results Thursday while going 0-2 in the team portion of the Lakeland Conference quad it hosted in Cornell.

While the league-leading Luck Co-op was a 60-22 winner on paper, the Wolfpack actually won all four contested matches.

Duellman pinned Levi King in 1:59 in the 157-pound match, Angell nearly went the distance but finally got a third-period pin over Gavin Rossow in 5:32 at 215 pounds and Jones also went to the third period before pinning Joe D’Jock in 4:52 at 138 pounds.

Preston Fredrickson closed out the dual meet with an 11-2 major decision over Joe Wiltrout at 144 pounds.

Unfortunately for the Wolfpack, the Luck Co-op was able to field a full 14-man lineup and took 10 forfeits to handily win the dual.

In a 57-12 loss to Unity, Duellman opened the dual with a win by pin in 3:49 over Haze Larson at 157 pounds and Angell got a pin in 1:10 over Caleb Johnson at 215.

Adrien Olson pinned Jones in 3:47 in the 138-pound bout and Gavin Holden was a 9-2 winner by decision over Fredrickson at 144 pounds. The Eagles took forfeits at 165, 175, 190, 285, 106, 120, 126 and 150 pounds. There were double forfeits at 113 and 132 pounds.
