Lake Holcombe sees a pair of tough losses

By Ginna Young

Lake Holcombe’s girls basketball program hit a rough patch over the week, as they took on two strong teams.

Jan. 9 vs. New Auburn conference (L 63-42)

In the opening half on the road, the Chieftains stayed with the Trojans, but ended down by seven points at halftime.

“We played a good first half and showed flashes of the team that we can be, but a rough second cost us,” said coach Chris Clark.

New Auburn pulled away in the second half, claiming a 63-42 win over the Chieftains.

Senior Emma Lechleitner led for her team, with 17 points, while freshman Payton Birkenholz had 10, with junior Abby Jones and freshman Katya Kuc each adding 7 points. Sophomore Alexia Hoffner also shot a free throw to add to the score.

Jan. 15 vs. Gilmanton-Independence non-conference (L 73-38)

Next up, was Gilmanton-Independence, in a step out of the league. However, Lake Holcombe still lacked scoring, even though the game took place at home.

The Chieftains fell behind early, down by 11 at halftime. The trend continued into the second part of the match and the Indees went home with a 73-38 victory.

Lake Holcombe’s record now sits at 6-7 overall and are 4-2 in conference action.

“It was a tough game,” said Clark. “We did not play up to our potential in this one.”

Lechleitner again led for the team, with 14 points, with Birkenholz close behind, for 12 points. Kuc came next, with 6 points, while Jones finished with 4 and Hoffner had 2.

“We need to pick our game up, since we have a lot more conference play coming up,” said Clark.
