Second-half surge propels Loyal to double-digit win over Gilman

Despite how the game started, the Loyal Greyhound boys basketball team went on to win against Gilman in convincing fashion last week.

On paper and in the standings, Loyal and Gilman appeared to be on the same level heading into Friday night’s game at Loyal. A low-scoring first half with neither team able to pull away told the crowd that maybe they were pretty even. Eight minutes into the game, Loyal held a 7-4 lead. After trading a couple of baskets, Loyal went on a 7-2 run, making the score 17-15 at the half.

First half scoring was led by Bryce Deegan and Cain Toufar, with 6 and 5 points, respectively. Jacob Schill and Landyn Johnston each connected from 3-point range to round out the first half scoring for the Hounds. Deegan was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe while Toufar and Hudson Hanson pulled down six and three rebounds, respectively.

Whatever Loyal coach Brandon DeSmet told his charges at halftime seemed to work, as the Greyhounds exploded out of the gates and were off to the races. A 17-0 run pretty much sealed it for the Hounds. Complementing the offensive output was a tenacious defense, as the the Pirates were held to 9 points in the second half.

Deegan continued his hot shooting, scoring 11 points in the second half, giving him 17 for the evening. Toufar and Schill both finished with 9 points, with Toufar just missing a double double, pulling down 10 boards. Schill added two more 3-pointers, finishing 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Johnston, Joe Treffinger and Aaron Radue also connected from 3-point land. Reed Stieglitz chipped in a basket to round out the scoring.

Loyal enjoyed what was in essence a “reset” game, coming off a 12-point loss the previous night to Blair-Taylor. The bench was able to contribute some quality time, giving the starters rest. The Greyhounds rebounded frequently and kept fouls to a minimum. Loyal finished 6-for-12 from the charity stripe.
