Marathon board will discuss the fitness center

Marathon High School student Logan Witberler spoke at the Dec. 13 Marathon Board of Education meeting on behalf of a group of students who want to use the fitness center outside of school hours. The present requirements for Marathon School District residents being allowed to use the school’s fitness center is they need to be at least 18 years old, have graduated from high school and taken a training course on how to safely use the fitness equipment. Witberler wants to change the age requirement to 16 years old.
“It has been brought to my attention that a lot of student have interest in lifting weights outside school hours when there may not be staff supervision available so they can have strong mental and physical health,” Witberler told the school board.

7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, at Three Amigos restaurant in Marathon. The public is welcome to attend the school board retreat because there will be a quorum of school board members present.
In other school news:
n Jacob Skalitzky, Marathon High School social studies teacher, spoke to the school board on behalf of students present who are in the American Government class he teaches about the spring break and sale of Bubbl’r bills they created.
“We wanted to simulate what it’s like to create a bill in Congress so we pitted two classes against each other where one of them assumes the role of the Senate and one assumes the role of the House of Representatives, and they need to work through it,” Skalitzky said.
n The school board accepted the resignation of Chelsey Utter as custodian at Marathon Elementary School/Marathon Venture Academy. The school board hired Paul Tasch as a new custodian to replace Utter.
n School board members approved volunteer coaches Hannah Franke for girls basketball and Grant Bouchon for middle school wrestling.
