WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18, 1998 Gravel pit okayed The Marathon County Board of Adjustment voted last week to allow County Concrete Corp., Marathon, a special exemption permit to operate a gravel pit in the town of Marathon over the objection of 15 area residents.
The parcel where the pit will be mined sits in the southwest corner of the town of Marathon and is zoned exclusive agricultural. State law permits gravel mining to occur in an exclusive agricultural zone if a special exemption permit is approved and the owner reclaims the land so it can return to agricultural production.
Neighbors close to the gravel pit presented the board with a petition signed by 15 people in opposition to granting the special use permit.
Concerns expressed by the neighbors included noise, dust, increased traffic and that their property would diminish in value. The parcel is expected to be mined for 15-20 years.
