Athens fails to make the playoffs

Edgar senior Karter Butt on Friday broke the school record for scoring the most rushing touchdowns in his team’s 44-0 road win against Marathon on a rainy night. He rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns against Marathon, giving him 57 career rushing touchdowns. Butt broke Tyler Berg’s previous school record of 56 rushing touchdowns.
Butt doesn’t have any receiving touchdowns in his high school career, therefore he is fifth in Edgar school history for having the most career touchdowns of any type from rushing, receiving and kick or punt returns. Berg still holds the school record with a total of 70 touchdowns in his career. Kyle Schueller is second all-time with 69 touchdowns, followed by Jorie Skrzypchak with 60.
On Friday, Edgar senior Kolbe Weisenberger rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown while also catching a 22yard touchdown. Weisenberger ran for a 42-yard touchdown. Wildcats senior quarterback Teegan Streit completed three of four passes for 39 yards and a touchdown. Streit also ran for a oneyard touchdown and he had a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown against Marathon.
Weisenberger, while playing linebacker, led Edgar’s defense with two solo tackles and two assisted tackles, a caused fumble and a tackle for loss. Junior defensive back Leyton Schuett had an assisted tackle, interception and pass knocked down. Senior linebacker Cael Higgins had three solo tackles including one tackle for loss.
Edgar’s football team won its 29th Marawood Conference championship in school history this season, only this year the Wildcats won the conference title outright with an undefeated record, instead of sharing it like they did last season with Auburndale and Colby. The Wildcats have won more Marawood Conference championships than any other football team. Edgar’s football squad has qualified for the WIAA playoffs 37 years in school history and the Wildcats have made the playoffs 29 consecutive years.
The Wildcats, 8-1, received a No. 2 seed in the WIAA Division 7 playoffs and has a Level 1 home game at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 20, against No. 7 seed Glenwood City, 6-4.
Kilty sixth in rushing
Stratford senior Koehler Kilty now has the sixth most rushing yards in Stratford school history after rushing for 160 yards and two touchdowns in his team’s 5414 home win on Thursday against Spencer/ Columbus.
The school’s rushing yard records only date back to 1993. Kilty has 3,013 rushing yards in his Stratford career. Wally Schmidt is Stratford’s alltime rushing yards leader with 3,964 yards. He is followed by Matt Olson with 3,634 yards, Kade Ehrike with 3,430 yards, Billy Niggemann with 3,299 yards and Chris Olson with 3,054 yards.
Jason Tubbs also achieved his 100th win as Stratford’s varsity football head coach on Thursday against Spencer/ Columbus. His son, junior quarterback Jack Tubbs, completed four of four passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns against the Rockets.
Stratford scored all 54 of its points in the first first quarter against Spencer/ Columbus and then let their reserves play the rest of the game.
Junior Jett Schoenherr caught a 34yard touchdown and he also had a 30-yard punt return for a touchdown against Spencer/Columbus. Junior Xander Curtice had a 38-yard rushing touchdown against Spencer/Columbus. Senior Gavin Leonhardt caught a 36yard touchdown and senior Cole Tichy hauled in a 46-yard touchdown.
Stratford seniors Matt Folz and Brandon Drexler led the defense with 13 tackles apiece. Sophomore Zander Zawislan had 12 tackles. Junior Carter Lueck paced the Tigers with two sacks and senior Kaleb Krummel added a sack. Leonhardt forced a Rockets fumble.
The Tigers currently hold the second- longest consecutive playoff streak among all divisions in the state. Division 2 Menomonie has made the playoffs 34 straight years and Stratford has qualified for the playoffs 32 straight years.
Stratford, 8-1, received a No. 2 seed in the WIAA Division 6 playoffs and have a Level 1 home game at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 20, against No. 7 seed Weyauwega-Fremont, 6-3. The Tigers destroyed the Warhawks, 56-0, on the road a few weeks ago in a Central Wisconsin- Large matchup.
Red Raiders in the playoffs
Marathon’s varsity football team has qualified for the WIAA playoffs for the first time in varsity head coach Ryan Winkler’s six years at the helm.
“The coaching staff is really excited for the players to have an opportunity to continue playing together,” he said. “This is a step in the right direction for the Marathon football program and we hope making the playoffs creates energy and excitement within the program, school and community.”
Marathon, 4-5, received a No. 8 seed in the Division 6 playoffs and plays a Level 1 road game at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 20, against No. 1 seed Auburndale, 8-1. Marathon lost to Auburndale, 44-29, in a competitive Homecoming game on Sept. 22.
‘Jays miss the playoffs
The Athens varsity football squad on Thursday lost to Gilman, 60-6, in its Homecoming game. Sophomore Riley Schultz-Becker caught a 25-yard touchdown from freshman quarterback Daxton Diethelm at the end of the first quarter against the Pirates.
This was the first year Athens was eligible for the eight-man playoffs, if they had an a .500 or better conference record. The Bluejays, however, only had a 2-3 record in the Central Wisconsin-East Conference and will miss the playoffs this season.
Athens, 4-4, will play one last game at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 20, against DeSoto at Alma Center Lincoln High School so its younger players can gain more game experience for next season.
