Second graders learn about presidents

Miss Johnson's second-grade class (above) listened to stories about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln on Presidents Day. The class read a poem about the presidents and did an art project to go with it. Mrs. Walden’s second graders (some of whom are shown below) have also been busy learning about the presidents in February. They researched fun facts on their computers, learned about the election process and even created fun pieces of art! Did you know James Madison was the shortest president and Abe Lincoln was the tallest?

The kindergarten students learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To better understand the injustice that he spoke out about, they played a game of “Fair vs. Unfair.” Students made two-sided signs and decided whether various laws and scenarios were fair or unfair. The students related the signs to their own lives and practiced recognizing fair and unfair situations in classroom situations.

First graders have been very busy continuing their learning. They are working hard on mastering phonics skills, especially long vowel patterns. Our current reading unit has been focusing on nonfiction stories about animals. We have read about how animals help each other and survive in harsh environments, and special features about their bodies. We even “traveled” to Antarctica and learned all about penguins! In math, students learned all about place value and are continuing to work on adding, subtracting and story problems. In January, they got to enjoy their Christmas activity day at the Loyal Rec. Center. They participated in Christmas games, a craft, bingo and even decorated Christmas cookies! First graders also got to have a tasting party after reading about where different foods come from. They tasted some different cheeses and jellies (photo above). We are looking forward to more learning and fun as spring approaches!

The Loyal School District hosted a Bus Driver Appreciation Week breakfast on Feb. 14. The bus drivers were treated to egg bake, cinnamon rolls, juice, milk, coffee and string cheese. A big “thank you” to the food service staff for making the meal and to our bus drivers for the great job they do for our students every day!
