October events at the CCL
October is nearly here and Halloween isn’t the only thing available for people in the area to participate in. Here are some of the activities happening at the Colby Community Library throughout the month of October.
October is National Friends of Libraries Month. The Friends of the Colby Community Library (CCL) group plays a vital role in supporting the CCL with time, talent, and treasure.
Consider joining to meet community- minded people and to show your support of the CCL, either as an individual, family, or sponsor. For the best deal, become a lifetime member and choose a free canvas bag or Tshirt. Dues are collected at each level of membership. Contact the library for costs.
Beginning Monday, October 2, play the “Spin to Win Game” at the CCL. When checking out materials, the cardholder may spin the wheel once per day. Winners will select prizes from carts of colorful merchandise. One win per cardholder during the month of October. The game will continue until prizes are gone. This is for all ages.
Bookmark Coloring Contest
A bookmark coloring contest will be held during the month of October. Pick up a bookmark (beginning October 2), color it at home, fill out contact information, and return it by October 31 before 7 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in youth, teen, and adult categories.
Thank Goodness It’s Friday classes are back. Registration begins Monday, October 2, for “Make Your Own Leather Earrings” to be held Friday, November 10 at 6 p.m. in the RCU Community Room at the CCL. The event for adults, hosted by the Friends of the CCL, has a fee for instruction and supplies to make three pairs of earrings. Snacks and beverages are welcome. Register by visiting the library or calling 715-2232000. The registration fee needs to be paid one week after signing up. Class is limited to 30 participants.
Adult Challenge
Remember to be filling out the adult Read or View the Rainbow Challenge folders. Entries are due December 29 to be in the drawing for Abby/Colby Chamber gift certificates.
The evening book club will meet Tuesday, October 17 at 6 p.m. to discuss “Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate. A supplemental non-fiction title (also by Wingate), “Before and After,” is also available. Amy Becker is the discussion leader.
Craft and Hobby night for adults is scheduled for Friday, October 20 beginning at 4 p.m. in the RCU Community Room at the CCL. Participants work on individual projects or can assist with items needed for upcoming library programs.
Friday morning weekly story times begin on October 6 at 10 a.m. in the Children’s STEAM room. Children, ages 2-5, and an adult are invited to hear stories and poems, sing songs, and create crafts. If you are interested in joining the literary fun with Mrs. Jean, contact the library. There are schedules available for the fall/ winter session.
Take and Make Crafts
Take and Make bags are available for young crafters each month at no cost. Autumn and friendly Halloween crafts are featured in October, due to the generosity of the family and friends of Virginia (Ginny) Brown.
Trick or Treat
Visit the Colby Community Library on Tuesday, October 31 for Trick or Treat fun. Pick up treats starting at noon until 7 p.m. A variety of Halloween candy and non-candy treats will be available.
While out and about shopping, look for items to purchase and donate to the “Busy Bee Backpacks” service project in November. Youth patients at area medical centers will receive the backpacks, and the Friends of the CCL are asking the community to contribute new small toys, stuffed animals, dolls or action figures, games, activity books, and other items to keep youth busy while undergoing treatments. Bring the new items to the CCL from November 1-22.
Victorian Christmas Tea
To celebrate the Sesquicentennial of Colby, the CCL is hosting a Victorian Christmas Tea on Saturday, December 2 at 11 a.m. Tickets will start being sold on Wednesday, November 1. The event will feature 3 tea courses and 3 food courses. There will be a limit of 42 tickets sold for the tea. This event is for adults only. Vintage attire is encouraged.
The Colby Community Library’s autumn hours are Monday, Wedenesday and Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday noon p.m. The library is closed on Saturday and Sunday during the autumn and winter months. CCL will assist patrons with curbside. Call 715-2232000 to schedule a pick up during open hours.
