Chieftains put up great effort against league foes
The Lake Holcombe volleyball program took part in a pair of league matches over the week, but couldn’t pull out a win, depsite their best efforts.
Sept. 5 vs. conference New Auburn (L 3-2)
First up, the Chieftains hosted New Auburn, in what would turn out to be a lockdown, drag-out battle for the victory.
Lake Holcombe started slow in the first set and the Trojans claimed that one, 25-16. The second set was a different matter “We had a slow start, but they had an amazing run in the second set, to come back from a very large deficit, to almost win that set,” said coach Beth Meddaugh.
After dropping the second set, 25-23, Lake Holcombe charged back to win the third and fourth sets, 25-22 each, but the final set went to New Auburn, 15-7, giving them the win.
“They fought hard in the rest of the sets, but came up just a bit shy of the win in the fifth set,” said Meddaugh.
Senior Ava Story led the team with 12 kills, while senior Ella Hartzell ended the night with 17 digs and 6 assists, followed by junior Chloe Lee, with 16 digs and 5 assists.
“Passing was great, every single player had at least one assist and the hitters were hitting well,” said Meddaugh. “It was a great effort by this team.”
Sept. 7 vs. conference Winter (L 3-0)
The Chieftains then faced off with Winter on the road, but couldn’t get the win, dropping the match in three sets, 25-14, 25-15 and 25-16.
Junior Abby Jones came away with 6 kills, followed by junior Emmy Kirkman, with 7 assists and 12 digs, with Lee also adding 12 digs.
“Both the JV and varsity teams had an off night at Winter,” said Meddaugh. “Despite the loss, the back row had an exceptional night of passing.”
