Fuzzy’s General Store closing brings an end to an era
It is the end of an era for a local business in the Medford area. Fuzzy’s General Store and Bait Shop will be closing its doors after 36 years of business as Gary Ellenbecker aka “Fuzzy” has decided it is time to retire. Opening in April of 1987, Fuzzy’s has been a staple for those traveling northwest of Medford.
Ellenbecker has owned and operated the store since it opened in 1987. Ellenbecker bought the building from Otto Schmeiser. The property sits on the corner of CTH E and Perkinstown Ave. Some of Ellenbecker’s friends thought a general store and bait shop would be nice to have in the area. Before Ellenbecker bought the property, the building was used as a service station.
Converting the store from a service station to a general store and bait shop proved to be a lot of work. Some of Ellenbecker’s favorite memories were all the work that he put into the building to make it what it is today. He said, “It was a lot of work, with a new roof, new siding, putting up a wall and installing the minnow tanks.”
When asked what he will miss the most, Ellenbecker responded, “the people.” He continued, “I will also miss the kids that come in.” Kids from all over the area would often stop on their bicylces for a snack, or for bait. In recent years, they would show up on their UTVs or ATVs as well. Fuzzy’s was well known with the local children. Years ago, some ladies around the area lakes gave Ellenbecker a Certificate of Appreciation for the help he gave the children in the area. The Certificate of Appreciation was another of Ellenbecker’s favorite memories to look back on over the years.
The store has been a great stop for those that forgot something in town, for fishermen heading out to the water, or people heading out camping. In more recent years, those taking rides on their UTVs or ATVs could stop and gas up their machines as well.
Although the store is closing, Ellenbecker has a lot to look forward to in retirement. He said there are a lot of repairs and projects he wants to do. He also said, “I am looking forward to fishing and camping more.” He also wants to take a trip to Alaska with his wife.
Ellenbecker said that he would like to say, “thank you for all the years of patronage and the help throughout the years.” The last day Fuzzy’s will be open will be Sunday September 10. The store will be open until 5 p.m.
