George Michael Baumgartner George Michael Baumgartner

1940-2023

George Michael Baumgartner of Pinckney, Michigan, passed away on July 21, 2023 at the age of 83 years. George was born on Feb. 16, 1940 in Medford, to Theresa and Michael Baumgartner and graduated from Medford High School in 1958. Soon after graduation he enlisted in the US Coast Guard for four years and was serving aboard the Cutter Sundew when he participated in rescuing the only two survivors of the sinking of the ore carrier Carl D. Bradley in Nov. 1958.

After his service in the Coast Guard, George worked at a variety of jobs across the state of Wisconsin. In 1995 he reconnected with a former classmate, Floreine Schubert, who had been his procession partner on several occasions as school children, and they were married on July 20, 1996 in Medford. Since she already was living in Pinckney, he joined her there and lived in Pinckney until his death.

He is survived by his wife Floreine, step-daughters, Barbara and Cheryl; and step-son Peter; four stepgrandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Johnson, Charlotte, and Margaret; and brother, “Doc” Frederic; and sister-in-law, Lois; and nephews, Eric and Nathan.

George was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Aaron (in infancy) and Jon; and his brotherin-law, OJ Johnson. George will be remembered as a kind, gentle man with a great sense of humor and a fantastic memory for birthdates and weddings. His remains have been cremated, and a gathering in his memory will be held at a later date. To give his favorite words of wisdom, “Keep on trucking! Therein lies the key.”
