Sonnentag and Weir set new school records

By Ginna Young

Cadott’s track program saw a number of records broken over the week, as they took part in not one, but three events.

April 25 McDonell Invitational

The first meet on the books for Cadott, was at McDonell, for the Father Mac Relays.

“It was a fun meet, as every event was scored as a relay,” said coach Pat Rothbauer.

Field events and hurdles all had three people competing, then their scores were added together, to make a final team score in that event.

“It is a good change of pace in the middle of the season, and helps build some team chemistry, as everyone has to work together,” said Rothbauer.

April 27 Bloomer Invitational

It was then off to Bloomer, where everyone got in on the action and the team had many personal records (PRs) set.

“Last night’s meet was a very good meet,” said Rothbauer.

The girls team came away with first place out of six teams. Three of the relay teams also placed first – the 4x100-meter (freshmen Taylor Hager and Lilly Spaeth, junior Kendall Webster and sophomore Keira Urbanek) in a time of 57.61; 4x400-meter (junior Jaycee Stephens, Hager, senior Lucy Lindeman and freshman Iszy Sonnentag) in a time of 4:22.81; and 4x800-meter (sophomore Mckenna Steinke, Webster, sophomore Mia Weggen and Lindeman) in a time of 11:47.23.

Placing first individually for the girls, was Sonnenatag, who took top honors in the 400-meter dash (1:01.52), long jump (15-08.5) and 100-meter hurdles (16.06), in which she broke a school record.

“She had a great day, as she also broke the hurdle record in the freshman decathlon, as well,” said Rothbauer.

Coming up with second place finishes for the Hornets, were senior Haley Larson in the 800-meter run (3:24.86); Steinke in the 3,200-meter run (14:15.73); Stephens in the 300-meter hurdles (50.31); freshman Haley Mathison in the discus throw (9503); Lindeman in the shot put (29-08.75); and sophomore Adrianna Goodman in the triple jump (30-09).

Ending in third, were Goodman in the long jump (14-08.75); junior Emma Kowalczyk in the triple jump (30-05) and 100 hurdles (18.23); freshman Josie Roth in the 1,600-meter run (6:44.5); and Lindeman in the discus (91-00).

Roth also placed fourth for the Hornets, with a time of 6:44.5, in the 1,600 run.

“Josie Roth did a great job in the distance races, as she ran 800, 1,600 and 3,200 in the same meet,” said Rothbauer.

On the boys side, the 4x400 relay team of junior Easton Goodman, and seniors Nick Fasbender, Cole Pfeiffer and Peter Weir, took first place (3:48.25).

Weir also brought home first in the 400 dash (52.46) and 800 run (2:03.25), along with third place in the high jump (5-02). Junior Wyatt Engel came up with second place for the Hornets, in the 110-meter hurdles (17.41) and 300 hurdles (46.78), as well as placing fourth in the triple jump (35-00.5).

“Wyatt had a great meet, as he placed in all of his events,” said Rothbauer.

Goodman placed second in the long jump (16-08.5), while junior Dylan Drehmel was third in the high jump (5-02). Placing fourth for Cadott, were senior Levi Lindsay in the 300 hurdles (49.24) and freshman Will Saibyn in the 800 run (2:21.51).

“We had numerous athletes try new events and [they] competed very well,” said Rothbauer.

April 29 UW-La Crosse Invitational

To finish out the week, the Hornets headed to UW-La Crosse.

“The weather was cold, blustery and a tad bit rainy,” said Rothbauer. “Not ideal, but the venue was awesome. It was also nice, because we competed against a lot of people that we have not seen this year. Most were from bigger schools than us, so the competition was pretty tough.”

Sonnentag again came up big for the Hornets, as she ran in the 300 hurdles for the first time this year, and won the event (48.37). She also broke her own record in the 100 hurdles that she set two days before, with a second place finish (15.84). Sonnentag also placed third in the long jump (1510.75).

Weir also broke a school record, placing first in the 800 run (1:59.36).

“He ran a great race and really was not pushed by anyone else at all,” said Rothbauer.

Now that the athletes have had a taste of where the State meet is held, Rothbauer hopes that will spur them on.

“Hopefully, it makes the kids hungry to get back down there,” he said.
