Duellman heads to State for Wolfpack

By Ginna Young

As the lone wrestler at Sectional action Feb. 18, Cornell-Gilman junior Troy Duellman (145 pounds) was on the mat at Edgar.

Duellman tore through the quarterfinals over Brandon Wright, of Turtle Lake-Clayton, in a 3:28 fall, then won over Glenwood City’s Gabe Knops, in a 4-1 decision.

“He won his first two matches handily and he was controlling the championship match at Sectionals till the very end, when he gave up a quick three points,” said Greg Sonenntag. “Outside of the last 30 seconds of that match, he wrestled very well.”

After dropping the first place match to Tyler Sunday (Clear Lake) in a 5-4 decision, Duellman wrestled Stratford’s Ryan Becker, winning with a 5-2 decision, to take second and punch his way to State competition.

With the new seeding process, we received the sixth seed,” said Sonnentag. “Though a bye would have been nice, I think he is sitting in a good spot. We are excited to give it another go and looking forward to getting up on the podium this year.”
