Rib Lake man dies, Medford woman injured in crash

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office has identified the 28-year-old man killed in a Feb. 15 traffic crash in the town of Halsey as Sebastian S. Petrie of Rib Lake.

The two-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 10:17 a.m. on Wednesday, February 15, near the intersection of County Road A and Mason Road. As a result of the crash, Aubrey Haenel, 18, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Aspirus Wausau Hospital. The road reopened to traffic at 2:10 p.m.

According to the crash report, Haenel was eastbound on CTH A, coming over the crest of a hill near the intersection with Mason Road. She said she saw the Petrie vehicle which was westbound cross the solid center line and enter her lane.

The two vehicles collided head-on Both units rotated counter clockwise from the force of the impact and traveled only a few feet from the area of impact. Haenel’s vehicle came to final rest facing northeast. The Petrie vehicle came to rest facing southwest. Petrie was not wearing a seatbelt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into this crash by the Marathon County Crash Reconstruction Team is ongoing while awaiting toxicology results. Blood tests are standard in fatal crashes. The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Athens Police Department, Athens Fire & EMS, and the Marathon County Medical Examiner’s Office.
