Tigers win the title at D.C. Everest
Stratford’s varsity wrestling squad was the top team at the conclusion of the January 9 Fred Lehrke Invitational at D.C. Everest High School. Stratford scored a team-high 392 points compared to host D.C. Everest in second place with 336 points.
Freshman Colin Cournoyer won the 113-pound weight class championship. His older brother, sophomore Trenton Cournoyer, won first place at 129 pounds. Senior Jackson Ormond won the 195-pound championship.
Stratford senior Ryan Becker took second place at 152 pounds and sophomore Carter Lueck finished second at 182.
Jesse Bauer placed third at 106 pounds and Sawyer Grabow was third at 145. Roman Schmidt took fourth place at 106 pounds, Mathias Kaiser was fourth at 120 and Matt Kolb was fourth at 285.
Kaleb Krummel took fifth place at 160 pounds and Jack Tubbs was fifth at 170. Cayden Leonhardt placed sixth at 132 pounds and Drew Gage was sixth at 182.
Stratford head wrestling coach Adam Davison was pleased with his team’s performance in the tournament.
“We had a great day, individually and as a team,” Davison said. “Win- ning a tournament with that many solid teams in it takes a team effort. Having nine kids finish in the top four (on the podium) and to win as many matches as we did was huge.”
“A huge shout out to our fans. We had a great cheering section and that helps. Trenton and Colin Cournoyer with back-to-back pins in the finals was great, and after the layoff between the round before with the tribute to the Lehrkes, it certainly gave us a big spark as the day finished up.”
Stratford will attempt to win its 10th consecutive Marawood Conference dual title this Thursday, January 19.
