Knights run over Raiders, fall short against Falcons

In the two games played over the week, the Cornell-Lake Holcombe softball program brought home a conference win, but dropped the second conference match-up.

May 10 vs. Bruce conference (W 20-1)

Heading to Bruce, the Knights got out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning, then two more in the second. Their offense really came to life in the third inning, bringing in 16 runs across the plate.

Bruce tried to mke a comeback in their side of the inning, but could only put one run on the board, and the game went to the Knights, 20-1.

Sophomore Brooke Anderson went all three innings on the mound for the Knights, with just 2 hits and 1 run, while notching 6 strikeouts.

Offensively, junior Rachel Schilling, sophomores Makya Hetherington and Allie Turany, and freshman Bralee Schroeder all got on the board with a hit. Senior Teaira Spaeth walked twice in the game, as did sophomore Grace Harycki, while Anderson, junior Michayla Turchen, sophomores Teryn Close and Mahli Wilson, and freshmen Savanna Bleske and Candice Spaeth each walked once.

Turany had 3 runs batted in (RBI), followed by Hetherington and Schroeder, with 2. Freshman MacKenzie Bera, T. Spaeth, C. Spaeth, Schilling, Anderson and Close each had an RBI.

May 12 vs. Flambeau conference (L 9-7)

On a hot, muggy day, the Knights then traveled to Flambeau, and while it was a close affair, the visiting team couldn’t come up with enough runs to counteract some mistakes early on.

“We dug ourselves a hole, committing eight errors in the first three innings,” said coach Andy Lorenzen. “It’s hard to win a game, when you have that many mistakes.”

The match when to the Falcons, 9-7. Anderson pitched for six innings, giving up 5 hits and 9 runs, walking 2 and striking out 5.

On the batting side, Turchen ended the day with 3 hits, followed by Schroeder, who had 2, and Schilling, Anderson and Hetherington all had 1 hit each. Schroeder, freshman Izabelle Schwingle, Anderson and Close each walked once.

Anderson came up with 2 RBI, while Schroeder, Turchen, Hetherington and Close all recorded 1.
