eople Senior Citizens

The Senior Citizens card group met on Oct. 20 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead were played. Andy Hoef won the first game and Steve Klockzum took second place. Bitsey Ewan won the second game and Norbert Lake placed second. Sally Stubbe received low score.

Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Aluminum can drive

The Athens public schools athletic department has an aluminum can collection available for people to donate their cans year round at the Heartland Cooperative C Store, located at 900 Pine St. in Athens.

Dale and Tracy Westfall transport the donated alumninum cans to a scrap yard to get money to help support Athens public school athletic teams.

Athens Lions Club

Athens-area residents are welcome to attend the Athens Lions Club’s monthly meetings, which are held at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, alternating between Balz Inn and Landmark Bar.

Anyone with questions can call Athens Lions Club member Steve Sondelski at 715218-1496. New members and guests are always welcome at the monthly meetings.

Athens fitness

The fitness center for Athens School District residents to use is open from 6-8 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays inside Athens High School.

Athens School District residents wanting to use the fitness center must sign a liability waiver in the high school office prior to utilizing the fitness center.

Edgar -Santa Coming

On Sunday, Dec. 11, at 1 p.m. watch Santa with his reindeer come down Main Street and turn on the Christmas tree lights by the log cabin at Oak Street Park. Then Santa and Mrs. Claus will light the tree in the Oak Street shelter before giving out treats to the children.

There will be hot chocolate, cookies and bars. Special activities are planned throughout the day from 1-3 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to help serve and bake cookies and bars. Call 715-352-2577, ask for Karen if you are able to help.

Birth Announcements

Taylor and Caleb Gintner welcomed their nine pound -fourteen ounce, 22inch baby boy named Tripp Owen Gintner at Aspirus Wausau Hospital Birthing Center on Oct. 18.

Alyssa and Ryan Springer welcomed their six pound fifteen ounce, 20 inch baby boy named Waylon Randall Springer at Aspirus Wausau Hospital Birthing Center on Oct. 20.

Family Story Time

When it comes to entertaining children, getting them interested in literacy and setting them up to become successful readers, there’s no better place to turn than your local Marathon County Public Library (MCPL) location. Story times are intended to introduce children to literature and reading through storytelling, songs, games, puppets and fingerplays.

Some even include extra activities and craftmaking, too!

MCPL has numerous recurring story times scheduled throughout November at most of its locations, allowing families across the county to easily attend no matter where they live. The following story times will be held at the locations listed below: Bring your entire family to story time! Children of all ages and parents/guardians are welcome to this 30-minute program. Enjoy learning with all of your children through stories, songs and other literature based activities.

Wausau (300 N. First St.) every Tuesday and Thursday for the month of November from 10-10:30 a.m.

Athens Branch (221 Caroline St., Athens) - second and fourth Monday in November from 10:30-11 a.m.

Play and Learn

Staff from Children’s Wisconsin will read a story, share music and lead children through a craft project. They’ll also be available to speak with parents and caregivers about parenting and developmental questions and recommend community services that the adults might not know about. Events will be held every Wednesday in November from 10-10:30 a.m. at the Wausau library located at 300 N. First Street.

Edgar free breakfast

Edgar School District has announced it will participate in a new Universal Free Breakfast Program sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. All students qualify and there is no application for the family to complete.

While breakfasts will be free, lunches will not. Low income families are encouraged to apply for the Free or Reduced Meal Program offered through USDA.

The Knoll Fitness Center, which is attached to Stratford High School, is open from 4:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Monday thru Sunday, but the fitness center is closed from 12:30-1:30 p.m. each weekday for cleaning; it’s not closed an hour on Saturdays and Sundays for cleaning.

Stratford School District residents need to visit the high school office to get their keyfob updated before they’ll be able to gain access into the Knoll Fitness Center.

STH 97 construction

The following construction work on STH 97 between Stratford and Marshfield from now until November includes: Crews will finish making deck repairs on the bridge near CTH T and grading the intersection. Crews will begin restoration work at the intersections of CTH AAA/Galvin Avenue and CTH C.

Hunting Waste

The Central Wisconsin Conservation Club Inc. in conjunction with Marathon County Waste Management will be sponsoring a dumpster for the disposal of deer carcass waste (rib cages, heads, legs and fat scrap) during the upcoming deer firearms season. The dumpster will be placed in the Edgar Waste Disposal site, entrance located off of East Limits Rd. There will be also be a separate container placed there for unwatned deer hides which will be donated to the Lions Camp for the Blind. The dumpster will be placed there on Nov. 17 thru Dec. 8.

This program is being done as a surrounding community service to help to keep our environment cleaner from improperly disposed waste in our rural ditches.

We ask that people respect our intentions and only use the dumpster for the waste that it is intended for so that this project can continue and grow in the future.

Youth Events

Tween Writing Group Until Dec. 31, young writers between the ages of 8-14 can hone their writing skills by participating in an online tween writing group organized by the Marathon County Public Library. Leaf Silhouette -From Nov. 1-30, the Marathon County Public Library will offer a free Grab & Go kit for kids at all nine of its locations. Pokemon Club - Are you an upper-elementary or middle school-aged kid that loves Pokemon? Voter ID

Ahead of the Wisconsin Fall election on Tuesday, Nov. 8, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminds voters how to obtain identification, free of charge, that is valid for voting.

Valid identification for voting purposes includes a drivers license, identification card, military or student ID card, etc. There is no separate “voter ID.” A federally compliant REAL ID card is not required for voting purposes. Anyone unsure if their identification meets the requirements should visit the Wisconsin Elections Commission website to check.

To obtain identification to show at the polls for voting, begin online. A list of required documents to bring to a DMV Customer Service Center is available at wisconsindmv. gov.

If the required documents needed for an ID are not readily available, DMV has a process called the Voter ID Petition Process, to obtain the necessary information, This process, available free of charge, may be used to quickly obtain a receipt valid to take to the polls for voting while the remaining documents or verifications are obtained.

Anyone with questions related to obtaining an ID to vote should call the DMV’s toll-free Voter ID hotline at (844) 588-1069. Questions regarding voter eligibility, poll locations, voter registration information or other election information can be directed to the Wisconsin Elections Commission at elections. wi.gov.

People can start their application now at wisconsindmv. gov or at a local DMV Customer Service Center. To find a DMV, check hours, services and wait times, visit wisconsindmv. govcenters.

Drug Disposal

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, October 29. Free, safe disposal of your unused, unwanted or expired medications will be taking place. Take back locations are Mosinee (8 a.m. - 12 p.m.), Wausau (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)and Stratford (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.) police departments.

Place pills in clear zipper bag. Keep liquids, creams, powders and inhalers in orginal container. Remove all personal information from empty pill bottles and recycle. Place pills (in bags), liquids and creams (in original containers) into the Drop Box. Year round police department drop box locations are in Athens, Colby/Abby, Edgar, Everest Metro, Kroenewetter, Mosinee, Rothschild, Stratford, Wausau, Marathon City and Spencer, or check with your pharmacy.
