The television weatherman seems to …. The television weatherman seems to ….

The television weatherman seems to be right. We are at the peak of our fall colors. About all I can say is they are gorgeous. It just dawned on me the other day why I am enjoying the fall colors so much. I don’t have to rake them this year. I think there is a rake or two in the garage that I left so Savanna can get right to it.

Two of the big maples are just a couple that came up and I just let them grow. About all I can say is they sure kept my son-in-law, Bob Loos, busy with his blower keeping the gutters cleaned out.

The other maple is one I found growing in our lawn at the cottage we had at Sackett Lake. It was just in a bad place and I knew a better place for it. As I drove by the other day I saw that it is in full color.

Getting back to Loyal seems to be a weekly adventure. The last two times I haven’t seen anyone making hay anymore since someone started on Memorial Day weekend. They are into other things, like combining soybeans and chopping corn. Oh yes, and adding some stuff that kind of adds to the country smell when it gets applied to the ground. Just part of the cycle of keeping the crops growing.

I call this a deer/dear story. The other day I was sitting in my room and three dear ones walked in. My daughter Jackie, granddaughter Shelby Rueth and great granddaughter Savanna Dietsche. I think they found out the door is always open. So come on in.

The rest of the story came about later in the day. I was getting ready for bed. As I glanced out the window a deer came walking by. I think he or she might have been a bit lost as there is plenty of wild land on the other side of the complex. Maybe it just wanted to see what the front of the building looked like.

A few weeks ago I mentioned the Peterson Brothers of Comstock being inducted into the International Hall of Fame. Last week the Turtle Lake Times newspaper arrived and an interesting item showed up in their news from looking back. This was taken from their Sept. 21 issue back in 1972. It reads - “An estimated 4,000 persons from Comstock and the surrounding communities turned out last Wednesday evening to welcome their Olympic heroes, Ben and John Peterson back home. The evening began with a motorcade which lined up in front of Danca’s Country Side Sales on the western edge of Turtle Lake to meet the boys, their parents and Gov. Lucey who had flown here for the occasion. It was reported that 159 cars left Turtle Lake and more joined in along the route through Comstock, on to Cumberland and back to Comstock.”

Tiny Tony, population 113 and home to the Flambeau School District, made the news as Jim Leonhard stepped in as the new interim Coach of the Wisconsin Badgers.

Tony is just a short distance from Ladysmith, but I’m sure those people who go to Flambeau have a reason, so it is nice to get some recognition.

It reminds me of a time shortly after we had created the TRG and were attending a meeting of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association. At the time we had a gentleman who represented an insurance company and was trying to get newspapers to join into a group plan. The manager of our newspaper association introduced me and told him I was from the Loyal/Greenwood area. The man didn’t seem to know where they were and asked the question, “Is that anywhere close to Willard?” Seems he was well acquainted with the Plautz Brothers as his company seemed to go after large businesses with lots of employees.

I’m still a diehard Twins fan, but can’t get them on my television. So I end up watching the Brewers. Sad to say the season has ended and now I have to find something else to watch or do after supper. Writing my column took care of tonight. I guess what is really sad is the small group of fans that showed up for the last game of the season. Sports has developed the theory that unless you are number one you don’t amount to anything. People ought to be happy they have a major league team representing your town and support them win or lose.

We are down to the last month before the election. I’m still having problems trying to figure out if the ads on television are for one of the candidates or against. The bomb shell came recently when one of the candidates was discovered to have been at the Capitol on the day of the riot and used campaign funds from his 2020 failed election attempt to pay his way. Unfortunately I can’t vote for his opponent, but I can vote against the other candidate, a U.S. Senator who has been found to be involved in the riot, or at least voted against an investigation into it. Hopefully my candidates will win this time. And what has a bottle of beer got to do with the election?
