Hornets running toward the top as season progresses

The weather went from 90 to 55, like it saw a state trooper, for the Cadott cross country program, but either way, the fluctuating temperatures didn’t slow down the Hornets runners.

Runners and spectators alike were in for a hot, humid and wet course, as the Hornets stayed at home to host a meet featuring 20 schools.

The girls team proved to those present they meant business, taking third place, while the boys finished in seventh.

Individually for the boys, senior Peter Weir mustered through the heat and came back from fourth at the halfway point to bring in first place, with a time of 17:35.6.

“Conditions were not favorable for runners to perform well, but Peter showed mental toughness,” said coach Tom Weiss.

Coming in next for Cadott, was freshman Saibyn Will, who finished in 44th (21:20.1), followed by sophomore Ewan Weir in 51st (21:49.3) and senior Dawson Webster in 63rd (22:20.3). Sophomore Will Morgal followed that up with a 39th place finish (22:32.1), with senior Jake Rowe a step behind in 70th (22:35.8).

Rounding out the boys side, junior Sage Handrick placed 71st (23:45.2) and freshman Gryphen Lindeman was 111th (24:51.7).

Meanwhile, on the girls side, freshman Iszy Sonnentag was 19th (24:01.8), followed a step behind by junior Jaycee Stephens in 20th (24:03.5) and freshman Josie Roth for 21st (24:12). Sophomore Lyla Weggen came next, for 33rd (25:16.2), with sophomore Cortney Weggen in 41st (25:48.4).

Sophomore Mia Weggen was 56th (27:09.6), while freshman Marley Mengel came in 86th (31:01.3), with freshman Lexi Bremness hot on her heels in 87th (31:04.1).

Stephens, Roth and C. Weggen all set personal bests at the meet.

Sept. 24 Flambeau Invitational

It was then off to Flambeau over the weekend, where temperatures were drastically different. “A small meet, but the Cadott girls took first,” said Weiss. “Boys took second.”

On the individual side of things, P. Weir again placed first (17:08.5), while the next runners in were all grouped together crossing the finish line – Morgal, 14th (20:12.8); Will, 15th (20:14.2); E. Weir, 16th (20:29.6); Handrick, 17th (20:39.2); Rowe, 19th (20:47.4); and Lindeman, 20th (20:54.2).

Webster was next in 28th (22:01.5), followed by junior Branden Benzine in 42nd place (27:37.7).

For the girls, Sonnentag notched third place (21:47.6), while Stephens, Roth and L. Weggen were sixth, seventh and eighth, coming in with times of 22:40.7, 22:48.9 and 22:49.6. C. Weggen was 12th (23:50), M. Weggen was 15th (25:14.7) and Bremness placed 20th (26:25.1), with Mengel following that up for 22nd (26:27.8).

“What is really awesome, is Chequamegon beat us by 31 points at the Bruce Invite,” said Weiss. “Today, the girls beat them by six.”
