The county is looking at allowing all terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) to operate on county highways in order to build a year-round network of routes connecting trails and area businesses. The hope is the network would be a boost to tourism and business in the county much the same way the snowmobile trail system is a boost to area commerce. “It will be a boon for business,” said supervisor Dennis Fuchs.

The City of Medford will be developing a master plan as part of its planning process for city growth. It’s also revisiting its zoning ordinances. The Planning Commission decided last week that it is going to see what it would cost to have zoning ordinances updated before the master plan is pursued. The Planning Commission directed the city administration to work on the master plan over the upcoming winter months.

September 21, 1972

Construction of Rib Lake’s new 18 housing units for the elderly and low income families is expected to get under way shortly, following a conference on Monday of this week between the Rib Lake housing authority and Betty Grant, Madison, housing research analyst for the state department of local affairs and development. The program, announced recently is a new type for small communities and will be supervised by the state, through a grant from the federal Housing and Urban Development organization.

September 18, 1947

Top forestry directors from the U.S. department were at the office and in the field of the Medford district Tuesday to determine through actual observation whether or not the practices, as directed by the head offices, were fitting into the greater efficiency program the department is working for. Participating in the survey of the area in charge of Floyd Roberts, ranger, were Earl Loveridge assistant chief of the service, and William Kramer, operational chief both of Washington.

100 YEARS AGO

September 21, 1922

Medford High School’s enrollment continues to grow. The number of students this week is 276. The enrollment at the opening of school last year was 219 and the highest number last year was 226. Indications are that the school will reach the 300 mark during the year. The school was built for 150 pupils. To take care of the extra enrollment, Miss Margaret Richards of Columbus, Wis., has been engaged to teach English; at present she is teaching science also. Another teacher is needed and is to be supplied as soon as possible.

125 YEARS AGO

September 25, 1897

The M. Marcus Mercantile company is now located in its handsome new quarters, three doors north of the post office. The two rooms prepared for its use were completed early this week and the task of moving the immense stock of goods was commenced on Tuesday. The I Marcus Variety store, which has occupied one of the rooms for several weeks has now taken possession of its new quarters in the Doyon Block, where the two floors of the north half of the building will be occupied by it.
