Medford, Gilman clubs get seasons started at Thorp, Badger State Games

The Medford and Gilman archery clubs began their new seasons with successful outings at the Badger State Games in Wausau on Jan. 22 and at the Thorp Cardinal bullseye and 3D shoots this past Saturday.
At Thorp, Medford’s middle school and high school teams won team titles in the 3D shoot, while Gilman’s middle school team placed second. Medford’s middle school team also won the bullseye team title while the Raiders placed second behind Cadott in high school competition.
In the 3D shoot, Medford’s middle schoolers scored 1,514 points to get by Gilman (1,393) and Auburndale (1,379). Medford’s high schoolers scored 1,673 points to beat Marshfield (1,574) and Elk Mound (1,445). Medford’s Landen Viergutz won the high school boys competition with 289 out of a possible 300 points, Kirsten Weix won the high school girls competition with 286 points, three more than teammate and runner-up Jenna Wickersheim and Evan Czarnezki won the middle school boys competition with 275 points, eight more than teammate and runner-up Ashton Behling.
Gilman’s Colton Lang (268) and Wyatt Stephens (226) were the top two finishers in the elementary boys division and Reece Weir scored 254 points to place second in middle school girls competition, seven points behind Marshfield’s Kyllie Tisdell.
Medford’s middle school team title in the bullseye shoot was earned by scoring 3,053 points, 22 more than Cadott. Cadott (3,400) and Medford (3,255) topped a sixteam high school field.
Individually, Gilman had two champions with Casey Grunseth winning the high school boys title with a score of 294, five more than the third-place Viergutz, and Lang winning the elementary boys title with 273 points. Weix was the top local high school girl, taking fifth with 287 points. Medford’s Logan Langdon took third in the middle school boys with 272 points.

Badger State Games
Medford’s high school team scored 3,242 points at the season-opening Badger State Games shoot, while Gilman scored 3,199. They took second and third in the final standings behind Cadott (3,385).
Gilman was sixth out of seven teams in middle school competition with 2,798 points. The Pirates beat Elk Mound (2,510). Stratford won with 3,148 points.
Grunseth and Viergutz won silver and bronze in high school boys competition with scores of 289 and 286. Garrett Nerdrum of Cadott shot a 290 to take the gold. Medford’s Weix (284) and Tana Rappe (282) were fourth and sixth among girls.
Lang had another strong day in elementary boys competition, shooting a 260 to place second behind Thorp’s Dylan Reineke (265).
The weekend included a parent/child team 3D shoot.
There were 19 duos entered in high school competition. Medford’s Chrissy and Kirsten Weix placed fourth with 525 total points, Jenna and Jason Wickersheim were sixth with 513, Tana and Kari Rappe were 11th with 492 and Kaedence and Mike Ecklund were 14th with 450. Elk Mound’s Carley and Mark Gehrke won it with 550 points.
Medford’s Ezra and Ryan Hillebrand were eighth out of 19 teams in the middle school division with 443 points, while Gilman’s Makii and Douglas Mallo were 12th with 423. Sydney and Corey Lobner of Auburndale won with 525 points.
Medford’s Karson and Crystal Ecklund were seventh out of 12 team in the elementary division with 302 points. Lucy and Dave Ferch of Portage were the winners with 475 points.
