UW-Eau Claire has recognized Marathon area students on a fall 2021 dean’s list. The students are Kyli Blume, College of Education and Human Sciences; William Hilgendorf, College of Arts and Sciences; Alicia Jensen, College of Nursing and Health Sciences; Preston Krautkramer, College of Business; Clarke Mouw, College of Business; Lorelie Peters, College of Education and Human Sciences; Megan Schaefer, College of Arts and Sciences; and Kou Yang, College of Arts and Sciences.
Mini art exhibit
Throughout November 2021, the Marathon County Public Library (MCPL) offered free craft kits to adults containing various art supplies, then challenged folks to create a mini work of art using the provided supplies. Now, some of those works will be on display in a traveling mini art exhibit that will tour each of the nine MCPL locations this year. The mini art exhibit will debut at MCPL’s Wausau headquarters on Tuesday, Feb. 1, and will remain on display through the end of the month.
Covid dashboard
Marathon Public Schools has announced there were 15 people out of 850 students and staff with confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Jan. 24. The school has 180 staff and students on a close contact list. The school has had 156 cases during the 2021-22 school year.
Book club
Join the Marathon City Branch Library staff and other book lovers on Monday, Feb. 14, 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. for an engaging discussion of “Evvie Drake Starts Over” by novelist Linda Holmes.
Here is a synopsis of the book: recently widowed Eveleth “Evvie” Drake rarely leaves her house nearly a year after her husband’s death in a car crash. Dean Tenney, former Major League pitcher, is wrestling with why he can’t throw straight anymore. When Andy moves into an apartment at the back of Evvie’s house, the two make a deal: Dean won’t ask about Evvie’s late husband, and Evvie won’t ask about Dean’s baseball career. Rules, though, have a funny way of being broken— and what starts as an unexpected friendship soon turns into something more.
Catholic Schools Week
St. Mary’s School, Marathon, has announced a schedule of Catholic Schools Week. On Monday, Jan. 31, class colors will be assigned. Students will go roller skating on Tuesday, Feb. 1. Students should dress up for future occupations on Wednesday, Feb. 2. Students attend Mass at Newman High on Thursday, Feb. 4. Friday, Feb. 5, will be Grandparents’ Day starting with a 1 p.m. Mass and a presentation at school afterwards.
Halftime events
The Little Red Raiders will give a halftime performance on Friday, Feb. 4, at the var- sity basketball game held at Marathon High School. The school will also welcome back its 2010-2011 state championship boys basketball team to be recognized at approximately 6:45 p.m, between the the boys junior varsity and varsity games.
Baseball fundraiser
On Saturday, Jan. 29, the Marathon Baseball Association and the Marathon Athletic Club will host their fifth annual winter baseball fund- raiser at the Marathon City Sports Center.
The bucket raffles will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The awards ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. The grand prize and bucket raffle winners will be chosen between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Patrons need not be present to win and can contact coach Ron Kunkel for information or grand prize tickets.
Explorers research
Sixth graders at Marathon Area Elementary School are researching Wisconsin explorers who may not have received due recognitions. If you have information about such explorers, contact teacher Tera Fieri at tfieri@marathon.k12.wi.us.
