A situation that could have turned from bad to worse was mitigated by a Colby-Abby police officer on Aug. 15.

Around 4:40 p.m., the Central Fire and EMS District was called to a residence for a report of an exterior house fire. Upon arrival, CAPD officer Nick Rudolph had been on-scene and had extinguished the fire with an extinguisher from his squad car.

The fire melted vinyl siding on the side of the house and a window on the side of the house. The house also suffered some smoke damage. Central Fire put a positive pressure ventilation device in the home to push out any remaining smoke.

Central Fire and EMS Battalion Chief John Austin said a firefighter went inside the home with a thermal scanner to ensure the flames had been put out and were not festering inside of the wall. Crews were on-scene for less than a half hour and detoured traffi c around the area.
