Psychology majors Kenadi Diedrich and Zandria Lukes, along with accounting major Haley Reed, were awarded to the UW-La Crosse dean’s list for the spring semester in the 2021-22 academic year.
Dinner by the Gazebo
Dinner by the Gazebo this Friday night, July 8, will be hosted by the VFW Auxiliary.
Serving food will start at 5 p.m. and go until the end of the Old Timers Band concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. The food menu will consist of ham and cheese sandwiches, chips, pickles, pie, soda or water.
If it’s raning on Friday night, then the dinner and concert will be relocated to the Veterans Memorial Shelter in Memorial Park.
Farmers Market
The Athens Farmers Market is held every Tuesday during summer, from 4-7 p.m., in Athens Veterans Memorial Park.
Lions Club meetings
Athens-area residents are welcome to attend the Athens Lions Club’s monthly meetings, which are held at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, alternating between Balz Inn and Landmark Bar.
Anyone wtih questions can call Athens Lions Club member Steve Sondelski at 715-218-1496. New members and guests are always welcome at the montly meetings.
Garden Walk
North Central Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association is holding its 20th annual Garden Walk on Friday, July 15, from 1-7 p.m. and on Saturday, July 16, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
There is a fee for people to view six Athens and Marathon area gardens at the homes of Karen and Rick Guralski, Nick Peter, Claire and Bob Romanek and Jean and Doug Krueger in rural Athens and Dave Pickruhn and Barb and Korey Kaldunski in rural Marathon.
Baby strollers and pets are not allowed during the garden walks. The public should watch for windsocks at each entrance marking each garden featured in the Garden Walk.
Christian music
Rockin’ Redemption will perform free Christian music for the public in the Athens bandstand On the Square on Thursdays, July 28 and Sept. 15.
People are asked to bring their friends and family, along with lawn chairs to enjoy an evening of positive music and fun.
July Book Club
The public is welcome to pick up a copy of author Meg Elison’s 2020 young adult novel titled, “Find Layla” at the Marathon County Public Library’s (MCPL) Athens branch.

Grab & Go kit
The summer months are a busy time for everyone, but people shouldn’t forget to take some time to put up their feet and relax.
The Marathon County Public Library (MCPL) will help folks do this by offering an exfoliating salt body scrub as its Grab & Go kit for adults during during the month of July.
Adults can pick up a free Grab & Go kit from any of the nine Marathon County Public Library locations.
The kit will contain supplies for making the exfoliating salt body scrub including sea salt, Himalayan salt, coconut oil and powdered seaweed. Adults just need to mix it all together, along with a few ingredients they’ll need from home, and they’ll have a luxurious, spa-like scrub that will leave their hands feeling as smooth as they’ve ever been.
Kits are free and available while supplies last. People wanting more information can contact the MCPL main headquarters in Wausau at 715-261-7230.
Senior Citizens
The Senior Citizens card group met on June 30 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Two games of Sheepshead was played. Steve Klockziem won the first game and Sally Whaples took second place. Norbert Lake won the second game and Jan Lake placed second. Pat Frank received low score.
Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
