Workers at an agency that helps displaced workers find new beginnings may soon find themselves in need of those services. Northwest Wisconsin Concentrated Employment Program (CEP) announced this week plans to reorganize its operations in the face of budget cuts. Among the cuts will be switching of the local Medford Job Center from a full-time office to a part-time offi ce.

Making Strides Against Cancer, a fund-raising event for the American Cancer Society, will be held here this Saturday, June 7, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and the start of the “Strides” at 9 a.m. Registration and the “start” line will be at the Jaycee Shelter House near the softball diamond in Medford City Park. The event is co-sponsored by Memorial Hospital of Taylor County, the Medford Clinic, and WIGM Radio.

June 8, 1972

Gilman Community Betterment Association invites residents in the area to the annual Gilman Dairy Day celebration Sunday in the village park. The program will begin with the serving of chicken and barbecue starting at 11 a.m. The food service will include carryouts, according to the committee. Free milk, cheese and ice cream will be served by the Eager Beaver and Poplar Grove 4-H clubs. Cheese will be donated by Drangle Foods and Bellinger Dairy. Admission will be free to a pony pulling contest beginning at 1 p.m. “Kiddie” pony rides will be offered and other entertainment is being planned.

75 YEARS AGO

June 5, 1947

A new industry for Rib Lake, to be known as the Absorb- a-Tone Accoustic Tile Co., was assured this week with the purchase of a concrete building on the site of the former tannery, remodeling of which was started immediately by contractors Ed. Stamm and Martin Johnson. Plans for the remodeling are being prepared by Gus Krasin, Marshfield architect. Establishment of the factory has been under consideration since last November and for several weeks it appeared to be a certainty, the main delay being in awaiting a decision as to whether or not a new building was necessary. With this made, no time was lost in getting the project underway.

100 YEARS AGO

June 8, 1922

The Medford City Council met Saturday to hear any possible objections to the assessments made against property abutting the proposed paving on Main, State and Division Streets. Two objections were made, both of which were over-ruled by the city council. It is hoped to have the paving started sometime in August.

125 YEARS AGO

June 12, 1897

Monday last was a memorable day for the Catholics of this city and vicinity. The occasion was the visit of Bishop Schwebach, of LaCrosse. He was met at Dorchester by Rev. C. B. Weikman and Mr. T. H. Fredricks, who accompanied him to this city in a carriage. Elaborate preparations had been made for a proper welcome of the Bishop, and long before the hour of the distinguished visitor’s arrival a large number of people lined both sides of Perkins Street to witness the parade into the city.
