A state mandate to inspect homes for cross connection water issues may end up being pricey for Medford residents as the city looks to begin the inspection process. Aldermen at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting gave preliminary approval to a plan to inspect 100 homes across the city at random each year for the next 20 years until all of the city’s approximately 1,700 residential customers are inspected. The proposal calls for the city to contract with HydroDesigns of Brookfi eld, which currently handles the commercial inspections, for the first three years at a cost of $5,880 per year.

Two work camps to help with cleanup of damage to homes caused by the 1997 floods that swept the Minnesota/ Dakotas Red River Valley will be offered this summer by the Volunteers in Mission program of the Wisconsin Conference United Methodist Church. Anyone, regardless of religious affiliation, with working hands and a willing mind is welcome to attend. Dates for the work camps are June 22-28 and July 6-12.

50 YEARS AGO

May 25, 1972

Two noted doctors were given honors Sunday, May 7, by the State Medical Society of Wisconsin at Milwaukee and one of the two will be further recognized by Medical College of Wisconsin’s commencement exercises Sunday. Natives of Medford, they are Dr. Raymond C. Nystrum, retired Medford physician, and Dr. Walter Zeit, Milwaukee, the doctor also maintaining residence in Medford. Both doctors were among 23 physicians honored by the State Medical Society of Wisconsin and inducted in the “50-Year Club” during the annual meeting banquet May 7. Dr. Zeit also was represented with the society’s distinguished service award in recognition of his more than 50 years of service in teaching and administration.

75 YEARS AGO

May 22, 1947

With all members present and only one dissenting vote cast, that by Alderman Brost, the council agreed in special session Tuesday evening to sell the present golf course property to the golf club for $6,500 plus interest at the rate of 4% for a period of one year. Mr. Brost did not offer verbal opposition to the proposal except by his vote. Chas. Schmidt, who represented the golfers two weeks ago at which time the purchase offer was made, was present again Tuesday evening to inquire as to the council’s attitude.

100 YEARS AGO

May 25, 1922

According to the promoters of the Taylor County Memorial Hospital, the institution is to be for everyone. All patients will be welcomed into the hospital, regardless of their nationality or religious inclinations. The promotors have issued the following statement: “Few people realize just what an important part a hospital plays in the community. Likewise many people do not fully comprehend the large number of able doctors who would be able to contribute patronage and help support a hospital in this locality.”

125 YEARS AGO

May 29, 1897

The Medford cheese factory is now open and ready for business, and is under the management of John Schmelter, who has leased the factory. The farmers are requested to bring their surplus milk to the factory and encourage this institution, which was started for their sole benefit. They will be accorded fair treatment by the new manager, and paid liberally for their milk.
