The Athens Acres 4-H Club met on May 17 in the Athens High School commons.
Pledges were said and roll call was taken with 35 members present. The club currently has 72 members with the additions of Cashton and Sawyer Beran.
The secretary minutes and treasury reports were approved as read. The club talked about the many project areas that 4-H offers. Cloverbuds met after the meeting to learn about decorating cakes and cupcakes.
Old business included the club’s new Forward Financial account that is set up.; anyone interested can donate to Athens Acres 4-H through this account.
The club made recommendations to the Athens Fair board for improvements to the fair offerings. The club’s scholarship recipients are Elizabeth VanRixel, Andrew Frick, Anna Nowicki and Mathew Redmann.
On May 14, the club participated in cemetery clean up with the National Honor Society. Adeline Markman and Mathew Redmann helped along with 4-H alumni Carley Lipinski.
New business was discussed. The Athens June dairy breakfast is set for Saturday, June 4, from 7-11 a.m. at Memorial Park in Athens. Any and all help is appreciated. This year the club will pay for breakfast for all members helping out this morning.
The Marathon County 4-H is hosting 4-H Day at the Woodchucks game on Sunday, July 10. Club members should let Jenny Lipinski know if they are interested in attending.
The Athens Acres photo contest will be at the June meeting. This is a great way for club members to get their photos ready for the fair. These will be judged by a community member and prizes will be given. Club members needing a copy of the contest rules should let Jenny Lipinski know.
The Athens Fair is Thursday through Sunday, August 18-21. Fair booth ideas are needed and club members should bring them to the June meeting.
The Ha-Ha-Box winner was Lena Schug. The club’s next meeting is Tuesday, June 21 at 7 p.m. in the Athens High School music room.
Maple Grove board
Maple Grove Charter School in the town of Hamburg has three positons open on its board of directors, which are available starting in June.
As a director, a person would have the responsibility to enhance student learners’ education by supporting and promoting Maple Grove School’s mission, overseeeing goals of the charter contract, reviewing reports on student learning and communicating with school leadership.
Maple Grove Charter School Board of Director term limits are three years. To apply, a person needs to submit a letter of interest and their resume showcasing their strengths and experience to Trina Lutzke at tlutzke@athens1.org by Tuesday, May 31.
People who apply for Maple Grove Charter School Board of Directors’ positions then should plan to attend the annual meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 13, to introduce themselves to the board.
May Book Club
The public is welcome to stop by the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch during the month of May to pick up a copy of the book titled, “Peaches” by author Helen Oyeyemi, along with discussion questions.

Senior Citizens
The Senior Citizens card group met on May 19 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.
Two games of Sheepshead was played. Andy Hoeft won the first game and Butch Boris took second place. Norbert Lake won the second game and Pat Frank placed second. Gale Verpoorten received low score.
Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
Open house
The Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Service will hold an open house for the public on Saturday, June 4, from 8-11 a.m. during the Athens FFA June Dairy Breakfast at Memorial Park.
