An escaped bull in the City of Medford kept City of Medford and Taylor County Sheriff’s Department offi cers busy Tuesday morning as they led an effort to subdue and corral the animal. Unfortunately, all efforts failed and the bull was shot and killed in an open area near Ann’s Way and Hwy 13 during the noon hour. The bull, owned by Stephen Suchomel of Medford, was at the fairgrounds for a breeding soundness evaluation program sponsored by the North Central Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association. The animal escaped and efforts to corral it on the fairgrounds a little before 9 a.m. were unsuccessful as it crossed Hwy 13.

Medford’s Committee on Public Utilities voted last week to take fire protection costs off the general tax levy and put them on to citizens’ water bills. The switch is being considered as part of a Public Service Commission water rate study. Currently, the City of Medford pays the Water Utility $110,000 from property tax revenue for fire protection. That amount constitutes about 25% of the utility’s total budget. That money would be raised through water bills, raising them by “something less than 25%,” according to City Administrator Richard Johnston.
