Falcons track races ahead in Amherst
The Abbotsford track and field teams had two events over the last week, traveling to Amherst last week for a triangular and then participating in the Doc Schulz Invitational held in Edgar this Monday. The girls’ team won the triangular and took third in the invitational, with the boys finishing in third and fourth in each event respectively.
Amherst Triangular
The Falcons took on host Amherst and Newman Catholic in a triangular on Thursday, May 5. The girls’ team came out on top, finishing first with a final score of 84 points. Amherst placed second with 73 points and Newman Catholic took third with 67 points. The Abbotsford boys’ team placed third with 34 points, behind first place Amherst’s 120 points and second place Newman Catholic’s 84 points.
Winning their events for the girls’ team were freshman Azul Diaz in the 1600-meter run in 6:49.81, senior Bridgette Pogodzinski in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.11 seconds, sophomore Sydney Falteisek in the 300-meter hurdles in 52.33 seconds, and the 4x100-meter relay of Falteisek, sophomores Sommer Brodhagen and Briseida Escalara and freshman Chloe Cihlar in 53.90 seconds.
Taking second were Diaz in the 400-meter and 800-meter dashes in 1:15.80 and 3:12.33 respectively, freshman Reese Molitor in the 1600-meter run in 7:14.73, the 4x200-meter relay of Brodhagen, Cihlar, Pogodzinski and Escalara in 1:55.97, Cihlar in the triple jump with a distance of 31 feet, one inch, Brodhagen in the discus with a distance of 93 feet, eight inches, and freshman Margo Pogodzinski in the shot put with a distance of 30 feet, one inch.
Placing third for the Falcons were junior Tamika Heck in both the 100-meter hurdles in 23.06 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 32.44 seconds, Molitor in the 800-meter run in 3:23.43, Bridgette Pogodzinski in the 300-meter hurdles in 57.65 seconds, Falteisek in the high jump with a height of four feet, six inches, Brodhagen in the triple jump with a distance of 30 feet, ten inches, and junior Isabella Aguilera in both the discus and the shot put with distances of 91 feet, eight inches and 28 feet, eight-and-a-half inches respectively.
The boys’ team had two first place finishes on Thursday. Senior Ty Falteisek won the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:17.22. Also winning his event was junior Marcus Bohl, who took the discus with a distance 140 feet, one inch.
Other top three finishes included Falteisek taking second in the 100-meter in 11.81 seconds, sophomore Jack Schindler finishing second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.51, and junior Jake Hirsch taking third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.05 seconds.
Edgar Invite
The teams traveled east for the Doc Schulz Invitational on Monday. In a field of seven schools, the girls’ team took third with a final score of 102 points and the boys’ team finished with a final score of 62 points, which was good for fourth place overall.
In a special relay event designated for athletes typically participating in field events, the Falcons’ girls’ team took first place.Therelayteamof AzaleaAtkinson, Angie Chavez, Jackie Soto and Isabella Aguilera finished the 4x100-meter race in a time of 1:11.60. The boys’ team placed third in the same event, as the relay of Daniel Davilla, Fernando Perez, Landen Ploeckelman and Andrew Hirsch posted a time of 53.00 seconds.
The Abbotsford girls’ team also had several second place finishes in Edgar. Sydney Falteisek took second in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 17.65 seconds. The 4x200-meter relay team of Brodhagen, Cihlar, B. Pogodzinski and Escalara also took second place for the Falcons, finishing with a time of 1:55.80. In the pole vault, freshman Sophie Kulsea and junior Tamika Heck both reached a height of six feet, which was good for second and third place.
Bridgette Pogodzinki finished third for the girls’ team in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 18.08 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay of Cihlar, Escalara, Diaz and Iris Cruz also had a third place finish, coming in with a final time of 4:46.05. Finally, Falteisek took third in the high jump with a height of four feet, eight inches.
The boys’ team also had some top three finishes. Placing first in the pole vault for the Falcons was Jake Hirsch with a final height of eight feet, six inches. Sophomore Warren Flink also took a top spot in the pole vault, placing third with a height of eight feet.
Ty Falteisek finished second in the shot put with a distance of 38 feet, five inches. He also placed third in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 12.02 seconds.
With two more meets in the rearview mirror, the Falcons look ahead to next week’s Marawood Conference meet. The event will be held in Marathon on Monday, May 16, and will feature all twelve schools from the conference.
