Youth wrestlers punch their tickets to state tourney in Madison

The Medford Wrestling Club has qualifi ed four wrestlers for the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation’s Kids Folkstyle state championships set for Friday and Saturday at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.
Top-three finishes by wrestlers in their individual weight classes were needed to advance from this past Saturday’s eight qualifying tournaments held throughout the state.
Medford’s wrestlers competed out of the Merrill tournament.
Avery Losiewicz advanced as the champion of the girls 125-pound weight class in the 2007-08 age group. She had just one match, but dominated in it with a 16-0 technical fall over Lakeland’s Moriah Louis.
Oakley Sperl and Talon Judnic both qualified out of the 51-pound weight class in the 2013-14 age group, which featured four wrestlers. In the round-robin format, Sperl was pinned in his opening match by eventual champion Kyler Wynn of the Crass Trained Wrestling Club but came back to pin Oah Heersma of Auburndale and beat Judnic 4-3 in a close match to place second.
Judnic finished third, pinning Heersma in 1:44 and getting pinned by Wynn.
Caden Olson qualified by taking third in the 82-pound weight class in the 2009-10 age group, which had six entrants. Olson lost 13-0 to eventual runner-up Carson Weiler of Auburndale in his first match, but he didn’t lose after that, defeating Ethan Denk of X-Factor Elite 8-0 and Tyler Johnson of World Gold Wrestling 9-2. Reegan Roy of Laona-Wabeno was the champion, beating Weiler 4-2 in the final. Jaxson Fallos came up one spot short as the fourth-place finisher at 210 pounds in the 2007-08 age group. He lost 7-5 in his first match to Antigo’s Caleb Vandenlangenber, pinned Medford’s Jonathan Bartnik in 2:02 and then was pinned in 40 seconds in the third-place match by Willy Graham of Stanley-Boyd. Bartnik was also pinned by Graham in 1:18 in his first match.
Jordy Lavin went 2-2 at 110 pounds in the 2007-08 age group but did not place in a 10-wrestler bracket. He beat Gavin Tritz of Wisconsin Rapids 4-1 and pinned Aidan Kielcheski of Antigo in 25 seconds to reach the consolation semifinals, where he was eliminated by pin in 2:09 by eventual third-place finisher Cash Botting of the Aviators.
Trevor Kautzer was 0-2 at 66 pounds in the 2011-12 age group and Carson Olson was 0-2 at 91 pounds in the 2009-10 age group.

Three wresters from the Cornell-Gilman- Lake Holcombe area also advanced to state. Kadyn Jones and Taydyn Angell qualified out of the Merrill tournament, while Peyton Hugh advanced at River Falls.
In Merrill, Jones won the 115-pound weight class in the 2009-10 age group, which had five wrestlers. He was a 14-0 winner over Cedarburg’s Nevan Doyle in his semifinal and pinned Michael Hofrichter of Antigo in the final in 47 seconds.
Angell was second in the four-man 240-pound weight class of the 2007-08 age group. He pinned Manawa’s Landon Smith in 40 seconds in the semifinals and lost 3-1 to Marathon’s Alexander Poppe in the final.
In River Falls, Hugh won a threewrestler bracket at 57 pounds in the 2013-14 age group. He pinned Ryker Strom of St. Croix Falls in 51 seconds and Michael Froemel of Due North Wrestling in 1:42. Hugh wrestled with the Crass Trained Club.
