Borchardt makes all-state

Wokatsch is player of the year in South

Edgar junior center Reagan Borchardt is the only local high school varsity girls basketball player to receive all-state recognition in the 2021-22 season. Borchardt averaged 13 points and 9.6 rebounds in helping the Wildcats win their third straight WIAA regional championship.

For her efforts, she was awarded honorable mention Division 5 all-state this year.

Borchardt was also an unanimous Marawood South Conference first team player this season. She led Edgar in both shooting and rebounding. Overall this season, She made 149 of her 344 field goal attempts for 43 percent shooting from the floor. She converted 59 of her 125 free-throw attempts for 47 percent shooting from the charity stripe.

Borchardt grabbed 270 rebounds for the Wildcats this season. She hauled down 149 defensive rebounds and 123 offensive boards. Borchardt paced the Wildcats with 50 blocks this season.

Edgar’s girls basketball squad was awarded to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association 2022 girls basketball Team Academic All-State team in Division 5.

The Wildcats were second in Division 5 with a 3.941 team grade point average. Prairie Farm was first in Division 5 with a 3.980 grade point average.

Senior guards Allison Wokatsch of Marathon and Ainara Sainz de Rosas of Wisconsin Rapids Assumption were awarded Marawood Conference South co-players of the year. They are both unanimous first team all-conference players this season.

Sainz de Rosas was also awarded first team all-state in Division 5 this season.

Wokatsch, a four-year varsity starter, scored the exact 15 points she needed on Dec. 20 against Colby at home to obtain 1,000 career points.

She is the first Marathon varsity girls basketball player to accomplish the 1,000-career point milestone since her varsity assistant coach Nicole (Reisner) Myszka did so in 1998. Sisters MaryAnn (Witberler) Hegemann and Joanie Witberler were the first two Red Raider girls basketball players to score 1,000 career points.

Wokatsch finished her Marathon girls basketball career with 1,127 career points. She led Marathon with 16.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in this season. Wokatsch paced the Red Raiders with 314 points, 117 rebounds and 36 assists. She was second on the team with 35 steals.

She converted 116 of her 304 field goals for 38 percent shooting from the floor. Wokatsch made 53 of her 79 free throws for 67 percent shooting from the charity stripe. She converted 29 of her 85 three pointers for 34 percent shooting from behind the arc.

Wokatsch grabbed 81 defensive rebounds and 36 offensive rebounds toward her team-leading 117.

Juniors Lauren Kraus of Stratford and Annamarie Aue of Auburndale are also unanimous first team All-Marawood South Conference players this season.

Kraus led Stratford with 11.6 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.4 blocks per game in the 2021-22 season. She paced the Tigers with 291 points, 212 rebounds, 63 steals and 35 blocks.

She converted 104 of 240 field goals for 43 percent shooting from the floor. She made 83 of her 112 free throws for 74 percent shooting from the charity stripe. Kraus grabbed 119 defensive rebounds and 93 offensive rebounds toward her team-leading 212.

Edgar senior guard Malia Hoesly and sophomore forward Makayla Wirkus earned second team all-Marawood South Conference this season. Other South players on the second team are senior Kayla Kerkmann of Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, juniors Ashlyn Grimm of Auburndale and Maggie Wulf of Wausau Newman.

Wirkus led Edgar with an average of 2.5 steals per game and Hoesly was second on the Wildcats with 1.8 assists per game. Wirkus and Hoesly tied for third on the team with an average of 7.4 points per game. Wirkus led Edgar with 66 steals and she was the team’s second-highest rebounder with 138.

Hoesly secured the second-most assists for Edgar with 50. Hoesly was the third-best scorer for the Wildcats with 206 points and Wirkus was fourth best with 184.

The following players received honorable mention all-Marawood South Conference this season: juniors Maleia Kolo and Cristin Casey of Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, juniors Josie Ertl and Gracie Krings of Auburndale, senior Karli Lipinski and junior Leah Davis of Edgar, senior Jada Prihoda and junior Kali Prihoda of Marathon, senior Lily Zeimetz and junior Sidney Galang of Wausau Newman and juniors Bailey Linzmaier and Lexie Christopherson of Stratford.

Ryan Klein of Wisconsin Rapids Assumption was awarded Marawood South Conference coach of the year, after leading the Royals to their second straight conference title.

Assumption won the South title outright this season after sharing it with Auburndale and Stratford last season. The Royals finished as WIAA Division 5 state runners-up to undefeated Randolph this season, after winning the state title the previous season.

The following players made the Marawood South Conference all-defensive team: freshman Sarah Shaw of Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, senior Aliah Hamus of Auburndale, junior Morgan Schnelle of Edgar, junior Kali Prihoda of Marathon, freshman Lily Shields of Wausau Newman and junior Allison Lindner of Stratford.
