Gomez nets himself two school records

A record setting night from junior guard Esteban Gomez finally got the monkey off Abbotsford’s back. Gomez set a pair of school records on Thursday as the Falcons snapped a losing skid that extended all the way back to December.

The Falcons were playing in their final regular season game of the year, and looking for a bit of revenge against the Phillips Loggers, hoping to even the season series.

As for Gomez, he had added motivation to do well in this game. As a junior, he wanted nothing more than to send his fellow seniors out with a bang.

“I just came into that game knowing it was the last game of the season,” Gomez began. “I just wanted to let it all out. We had Hawkey, our senior, so I wanted him to have a last good game. So I just came out confident and aggressive and got to the free throw line a lot.”

The Falcons would leave Phillips with a boom, and Gomez was the Falcon who supplied the gunpowder and matches in Abbotsford’s 63-55 victory. Gomez finished with 21 points, and along the way, broke the Abbotsford free throw record, with 11 straight completions.

It was an impressive turnaround from Gomez’s first game with Phillips, in which he struggled from the floor, scoring just four points. He added another record as well, finishing tied with the all time single game steal record, picking the Loggers’ pockets for seven steals.

“Last year I wouldn’t even have tried to shoot the ball,” Gomez said later. “This year I’ve actually been trying to drive in and playing aggressive and I think I’m doing a lot better. “

Gomez was joined in double figures with a big showing from teammate Brandon Diedrich, who matched Gomez with 21 points. Adam Diedrich scored another twelve points.

Brandon Hawkey collected four points, JV Castillo picked up three points and Jacob Hirsch rounded things out with two points.
