Abby, Colby grads compete in NCAA indoor sports seasons
Alumni from the Colby and Abbotsford school districts are competing on various college teams this winter.
Class of 2019 Colby grad Ashley Streveler, a junior at St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minn., has started all 21 games for the Cardinals, and is averaging 7.4 points a game, 2.7 assists a game and 2.9 rebounds a game. She scored a season high 18 points against Martin Luther University on Nov. 15.
Hailey Voelker, a Class of 2020 Colby High grad, has played six games for the nationally ranked UW - Whitewater Warhawks, scoring a season high nine points against Edgwood College on Dec. 30.
The NCAA indoor track season got underway on Jan. 22. Colby High Class of 2019 graduate Mackenzie Huber is off to a lightening fast start. Huber, an All-American in the shot put last year for the UW - Stout Blue Devils, currently has the fourth best throw in the shot put and the ninth best distance in the weighted throw in the nation in NCAA D-III.
Huber’s distances in both events are ranked fourth all-time in the shot put and fifth all time in the weighted throw at UW - Stout.
Huber was first in the weight throw and shot put at the UW-Stout Open on Jan. 28-29, and backed that up with a fourth and fifth place showing in the shot put and weighted throw at the Gopher Classic with a new personal best in the shot put of 45’ 11.25”.
Melanie Kunze, a Class of 2019 graduate from Abbotsford High, is a sophomore for UW - La Crosse, and competes on their track and field team. Kunze was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles at the UW - Stout Open, and was on the winning 4x400 meter relay at the UW-Whitewater “Squig” Converse Invitational.
Carly Elmhorst, a class of 2019 Colby High grad and a junior with UW - Lacrosse’s track and field team, returns to the program. She is looking to improve upon her eighth place result in the javelin at the WIAC Outdoor Championships.
