Colby girls get rebound win over Bulldogs Colby girls get rebound win over Bulldogs

The Colby Hornets girls basketball team’s defense is going to keep them in a lot of games. The Hornets have found ways to put the clamps on opposing team’s offense, but they have yet to solve the riddle of their own offense.

Without an offense to put pressure on an opponent’s defense, the Hornets have struggled to finish games, and in the case of Colby’s road game with Cloverbelt foe Spencer on Thursday, the Hornet’s offense generated little buzz on the scoreboard.

Colby managed just nine points in the first half, and Spencer’s Heavyn Kind had her way with Colby, scoring a game high 30 points, just two points away from her career best.

By the end of one half, the Hornets were facing an uphill battle, down 23-9. Spencer’s lead grew to nearly 30 in the second half, but the Hornets kept on fighting, and finally found a spark on offense.

Alexis Vanderhoof hit several shots, Savana Thomsen found paydirt in the post, and Colby snapped off a 9-0 run to get Spencer’s lead under 20.

The Hornets had five players score, and posted 24 points in the second half. The Rockets did manage to score 31, stopping Colby by the final score of 54-33.

Alexis Vanderhoof scored a team high ten points, followed by Brett Schmitt, who scored nine points, all in the second half.

Hayden Willner finished with five points, Thomsen had four, Olivia Krause and Kylie Orth had two apiece and Harrison Schmitt chipped in with one point.

56-13

Colby shrugged off their loss to Spencer in emphatic fashion on Tuesday, Jan. 11, topping the Granton Bulldogs on the road for a 53-13 victory in Eastern Cloverbelt play.

The win improves Colby’s season record to 3-9 overall and 2-5 in league play. Stats for this game were not available upon publication.
