Falcons girls extend winning streak to three

What a difference a year makes!

In a sign of just how much progress the Abbotsford Falcons girls basketball team has made in one season, Abby extended its win streak to three straight after winning a tightly contested 47-43 ball game.

That the Falcons were able to earn this victory on the road makes it even more impressive. The win also gives Abby a 6-2 mark overall, and they now sit third in the Marawood - North with a 3-2 record in league play.

It was by no means a perfect start, with both teams ice cold from the floor. Sommer Brodhagen and Sydney Falteisek were the lone players to score more than one bucket in the first frame.

Brodhagen’s seven points helped guide the Falcons to a 15-12 advantage at the break, and it seemed some time in the locker room did both teams some good, as each team’s offense caught fire.

Both teams scored over 30 points in the second half. Rib Lake was led by a onetwo punch of Danielle Mann and Lauren Pelnis who scored 15 and 11 points for the Redmen, but the Falcons held the rest of Rib Lake to single digits.

Meanwhile, Falteisek found her touch, along with Adriana Fuentes and Briseida Escalera. Fuentes scored seven points in the second half, while Escalera, scoreless in the first half, had all eight of her points in the final frame.

They would need every point too, as Rib Lake had no intention of going down without a fight. The two teams traded baskets for much of the second half, and nervy free throw shooting from the Falcons, who converted on 14 of 24 attempts, kept things even through the fi- nal stretch.

In the end, Abby’s balanced offense was enough to get them over the finish line. The Falcons out-scored Rib Lake 32-31 in the second half, and Brodhagen’s 14 points, along with Falteisek’s 10 and Fuentes’ nine got the job done.

Alea Graff added five points, and Stephany Espino had one point. Falteisek finished with a double-double, pulling in 11 rebounds.

Abby’s next game will not be until Dec. 28 in Pittsville. Tip off is at 7:15 p.m.
