New alert system aims to prevent property fraud

The Taylor County Register of Deeds has a new website that aims to give residents a way to monitor their property in Taylor County and avoid falling victim to real estate fraud.

The Taylor County Register of Deeds office has implemented Land Notification, a site that allows residents to monitor their name or property for real estate activity. This free service generates alerts based on names or parcel numbers as provided by the resident. The Land Notification system will generate an email when a document has been recorded which contains the name(s) or parcel number(s) identified in an alert created by the resident. If this is known activity, the citizen can safely ignore the alert. If the activity was not anticipated, the citizen can follow up by looking at the property records or contacting the Register of Deeds office.

Taylor County Register of Deeds Jaymi Kohn stated, “A homeowner’s signature could be forged on a new deed or mortgage. The criminal who forged the signature could potentially walk away with thousands of dollars. Although this situation is unlikely to occur, it does happen in today’s world. Even though there have been no specific cases of real estate fraud in Taylor County that have been brought to my attention, it remains a possibility that this could happen. Homeowners should take a proactive approach and monitor what is likely the largest investment they will ever make. This is a great opportunity for the citizens of Taylor County, and everyone should take advantage of this free service.”
