Constance E. “Connie” Schmitt, 87, of Stetsonville, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 2021 at Wells Nature Nursing Home in Marshfield, while under the care of Heartland Hospice. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 1 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford with Fr. Patrick McConnell officiating. Interment followed at Holy Rosary Cemetery. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

She was born Jan. 9, 1934 in Dorchester to Alice (Lueddecke) and Ray Johnston. She grew up in Dorchester and attended area schools.

On Nov. 14, 1953, Connie married Lester Hartman. Together, they had five children and they resided in Medford where Connie worked as a waitress for Phil and Eleanor’s for many years. Lester preceded her in death in 1975.

On Oct. 21, 1977, she married Michael Schmitt. They resided in Stetsonville, and Connie worked for Northern Auto until her retirement. She also worked as an “Avon Lady” for many years. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, playing pinochle, and traveling. She and Mike traveled to many national parks in their RV. They also planned their trips to include visiting family along the way. They were longtime members of the Black River Ramblers Camping Club and met many friends through the association.

Connie was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford and the local Red Hat Society.

She is survived by her husband, Mike of Stetsonville; children, Mark Hartman of McFarland, Audrey Peterson of St. Charles, Mo., Judy (Pat) Vetterkind of Stetsonville, James Hartman of Florissant, Mo., Dean (Heidi) Hartman of Wisconsin Rapids; grandchildren, Jenny (Steve) Rowlett of O’Fallon, Mo., Joshua (fiancée Catherine Africano) Peterson of St. Peters, Mo., Lisa (Clint) Suchomel of Wisconsin Rapids, Christopher Matthias of Wausau, John Hartman, and Joshua (Jessi) Hartman, all of Lima, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Jordan Rowlett, Grace Peterson, Mia and Westly Africano. She is further survived by her in-laws, Lester’s siblings, Dottie Clark of Baraboo, Betty (Everett) Huebner of Colorado Springs, Co.; Mike’s siblings, Thomas (Barbara) Schmitt of Eau Claire, Dan Schmitt of Cadott, Patrick (Linda) Schmitt of Eau Claire, Jonas (Glenda) Schmitt of Janesville, and Kathleen (Lyle) Bourget of Two Rivers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Lester; and son-in-law, Mark Peterson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
