Douglas Apfelbeck Douglas Apfelbeck

Douglas Brian Apfelbeck, at the age of 56, died unexpectedly of natural causes on Nov. 25, 2021, in his home.

He was born on June 6, 1965, in Mauston, the son of Dale B. and Imogene M. (Hackel) Apfelbeck. As a teenager, Doug worked on area dairy farms and graduated from Colby High School in 1983. After high school, he worked for his Uncle Jim and Aunt Marilyn Whalen in Virginia spraying textured material on ceilings in commercial buildings. Doug moved to Lublin to drive school bus and repair vehicles at his parents’ business. He returned to Virginia and worked in construction for a short time then worked for a rental company in McLean, Va., primarily repairing skid loaders. In Virginia, Doug met Jennifer Edge, were married and resided in Withee. They were later divorced. He later started his own roofing and construction business. Doug worked for Hutman Heating in Abbotsford which helped lead him to work for Withee Oil Co. gas and service station. He installed heating and air conditioning units and responded to service calls at all hours. When he wasn’t working, Doug enjoyed being with his friends and family, deer hunting, snowmobiling, playing darts and horseshoes and camping near Ladysmith. Doug is survived by his mother, Imogene “Jean” of Lublin; his brothers: Jeff (Angela) of Medford, Steve of Lublin, Father Kurt of LaCrosse and Keith (Sarah) of Cedar Grove; his sister, Dena (Gary) Brantner of Wheeler; his nieces: Andrea and Erika Brantner, Avery and Anya Apfelbeck; many other relatives and close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Dale. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, 2021, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Owen. Father Kurt Apfelbeck will preside. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the church. Because his body will be cremated after the funeral, burial will take place at a later time at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Colby. Family and friends can watch the service live on the Maurina Schilling Funeral Home Facebook page or after the service anytime on Facebook or the website. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Owen is entrusted with the arrangements.
