THE TRIBUNE-P HONOGRAPH PUBLISHED IN ABBOTSFORD WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1981

Korean casualty husband of Abbotsford woman Wojner mayor, Weix resigns in Abby shift Mrs. Orle S. Bergner received a telegram Saturday from the Department of Defense, stating that her husband, Second Lt. Bergner, was killed in action in Korea Oct. 22. Mrs. Bergner, the former Carol Hanson, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hanson.

The death of Lt. Bergner occurred 11 days after entering actual combat in Korea. He had served during all of World War II without a scratch. Lt. Bergner was a Marine Corps veteran. He enlisted in that branch of service in 1933 as class valedictorian. He served in China from 1935 to 1938 and then went into the inactive reserve form 1938 to 1941.

During the time he was a member of the inactive reserve, he made his home with his sister, Mr. W.E. Moore, Wausau. He was employed by the county highway department and his the Lotz Sand and Gravel Co. while a resident of Wausau.

Called back to active service in February 1941, he served in the Pacific Theatre during the entire World War II. He took part in the initial invasion at Guadalcanal and was awarded the Silver Star medal for his part in the invasion. He later was in the assault group participating in the capture of Tarawa.

While on leave in the United States after his arrival in April 1944, he and Miss Hanson were married at Zion Lutheran Church, Wausau, on May 15, 1944. From 1944 to 1947 he was in China doing guard duty and protecting supply lines with the Marine Corps.

The Abbotsford City Council is undergoing several changes this month, with the result that the city needs a person to replace Alderman Hank Weix in the First Ward.

Weix recently moved from his former home to a different location in town, and thus could not continue to represent the First Ward. He officially resigned from the council at the regular Monday meeting this week. Weix’s resignation may be short-lived, however. He moved into the Second Ward, and Second Ward Alderman Val Wojner, now council president, will become Abby’s mayor on Nov. 15 when Mayor Bud Grube officially resigns. The council approved the succession Monday on a unanimous vote.

Grube also had to resign because of a move. He and his wife moved beyond Abbotsford city limits recently. Monday’s regular council meeting was his last as Abby’s mayor.

Meanwhile, Weix is expected to take over Wojner’s vacated spot in the Second Ward after Nov. 15. Assuming that happens, the city will have a new mayor and Second District alderman, and will be lacking only an alderman in Ward One.

The Ward is on Abbotsford’s northeast side. Anyone interested in the job should contact City Clerk Dennis Weix at City Hall or any member of the City Council. That group will eventually appoint a new representative for the district.
