George V. Hansen, 79, of Medford, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2021 at Aspirus Care and Rehab in Medford after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 1, 2021 at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford with the Rev. Ken Gauerke officiating. Burial with military honors by the Medford Area Military Honors Team will follow at Evergreen II Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 30 with a short ceremony from Ken Schmidt and Ken Gauerke at 4 p.m. at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford. Visitation will resume on Friday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
He was born on the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941 in Chicago, Ill. to Florence (Reierson) and Carl Hansen.
George’s family moved to the Dorchester area when he was a young child, then they moved to Abbotsford where George graduated from high school in 1961.
Following high school, George enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard, where he was called to active duty twice…once during the Berlin Crisis from May, 1961 – Aug., 1962, and again from 1975 until his honorable discharge in 1977.
On Aug. 17, 1963, George married Judy Harris at First Baptist Church in Medford. They resided in Medford where George started as a painter at his uncle’s business, Reierson Painting; then worked as a machinist at Streckerd Mfg.; then worked for Wisconsin Equipment until the business sold and he went to work at Arndt mink/ginseng farm until going to work for JARP Industries in Schofield. George would not have made it to JARP as safely and with ease as he had without sharing the weekly commute with great friend, John Lorenz of Lublin. Due to his Parkinson’s Disease, he retired in 1995. Although being diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of 35, George did not let that slow him down. He continued to live his life and make people laugh. Even though he was always working, George made time to do the things he enjoyed including mowing the lawn, grooming the logging trails, riding his 4-wheeler, fishing, and hunting. He was also a big prankster and especially loved to sneak up on people to scare them! When he wasn’t outside, he was watching boxing, making malts or baking brownies.
George’s second love (after Judy) was his 1921 Model T. He owned that car as long as he was married and loved working on it and driving it.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Judy of Medford; son, Stacey (Tammy) of Nekoosa; daughter, Katrina (David) Gorby of Eureka, Mont.; siblings, Carl Jr. (Freda) of Belen, N.M., Larry (Sharon) of Cambridge, Minn.; grandchildren, Angel (Derrick) Wolski, Patrick (Brittney) Radlinger, Ravyn Schmidt, Chance (Grayce) Schmidt, Izaak, Alek and Rylan Hansen; great-grandchildren, Carson, Hunter, Charlye, and one great-grand on the way. He is further survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Gloria Harris of Richmond, Va.; Roxanne Harris of Janesville, Wis. and TX, Joyce (Raymond) Piller of Stetsonville, Julie (Dennis) Nofsinger of Forsyth, Ga., and Gary (Karen) Harris of Stetsonville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter in infancy, Carrie Ann; mother and father-in-law, Vera and Eldon Harris; and brothers-in-law, Richard and Daniel Harris.
